Handout: British Monarchy General Information -Queen Elizabeth 2. as the british monarch -monarch is the head of the state -has ceremonial but little real power -represents the UK and the Commonwealth -head of the army -head of the church -poltical neutrality -limitied political power -cannot actually use some of her powers, since this would cause a constitutional crisis (socially banned) -british people pay taxes for the royals
Duties and tasks of the british monarch -appoints the british Prime Minister after his/her election(private conversation) -weekly meetings with the prime minister (consults him) -does state visits abroad -invites other leaders to come to the UK -declares, when a country is at war -travels the globe to strengthen diplomatic relationships -gives speeches -opens the parliament after elections -can dissolve the parliament -can delay bills and laws -can appoint bishops -signs documents (involved in political matters) and confirms them
Minor ceremonial tasks and activities of the Queen and the royal family -support charities -is represented by other members of the royal familiy when she cant be present -enourmous private wealth -open new (greater) buildings, institutes and hospitals -visits places
The meaning of the Queen for the UK -popular consent for the queen -strong apperance and personality -provides good sense and stability -stands for national unity -means very much for the british people -embodies public service -displays calmness, judgement and tolerance
Discussion -gets a lot of money, without working really hard - although she only has ceremonial power and functions as a symbol, she is too important for the UK -stands for negative aspects: out-dated society model; autocracy; social inequality and injustice, because the monarch is predestined for his/her task...
