Thoughts on Handshake application tool...

Description

For me I knew that I would have to get a job before coming to campus because I didn’t do the best job with saving up before hand and also expenses to pay. Since my major has to do with theatre, I also wanted a job that had to do with that as well. I don’t exactly remember how I found out about Handshake, but if I remember correctly it was either from an email, a preorientation, or advisor. I thought about working in the theatre shop but I wasn’t sure it they had been hiring and my only work experience was a little bit or retail and mainly food service. I tried asking my advisor for my major, but she said that jobs might open up closer to the start of school. After talking with my CoLA advisor, she advised me to get a job beforehand since a good number would fill up right when we get back to school. When I got on Handshake I wasn’t sure what jobs I would be eligible for, but I think the fact that it’s mainly made for UT-Arlington students makes it significantly easier to find jobs than it would be outside of school. One factor that I noticed and that I really liked was that under qualifications, one of the requirements was based on your major. That may not help some students who may want to try something different, but I personally found it helpful because I could filter out any jobs that either didn’t interest me or wouldn’t work with my major. After setting preferences in my profile I started looking through jobs that were available. Even though I saw a lot of jobs I needed something that would be on campus since I don’t have a car but I did like that off-campus jobs were offered. I started getting messages from companies for jobs whether online or in-person but not so much as to what I was looking for. The first job that I sort of considered was an after-school teacher assistant and I thought I would be able to make it work, but I think due to my resume and the fact that I would have to drive to get there led it to not work out. After that while I was looking through positions, I started filtering what I essentially needed and as I was doing so, I also bookmarking or saving jobs that I would possibly apply for later. I kept refreshing and checking back daily to

see if anything popped up that would be theatre related and to my luck a few positions did. Even though it wasn’t one working in the shop I ended up finding a box office position and I feel and think that this actually worked out better for me in the end. In addition to potentially working theatre productions, I also get to work sporting events which I like since I used to be an athlete and I love watching and playing sports so it’s nice that I can combine the two. Also, another factor that I didn’t realize until after I got the job is that students are limited to only working 19 hours a week and I find nice since work can get overwhelming and theatre is a pretty demanding major. Even after I landed the job I went back into Handshake and added things to my profile to make it more complete. I would definitely recommend Handshake as a way to find jobs around campus and also it gives you tips on how you can make yourself look good in case anyone comes across your profile....
