Health Assessment Vocabulary – Module C                    

Affect – Temporary expression of feeling Gait – The way a person moves and how they are balanced Posture – A position of a person’s body when standing or sitting Hygiene – The way a person appears cleaned and groomed and appropriate Body Mass Index (BMI) – A practical marker of optimal healthy weight for height and an indicator of obesity or malnutrition Ethnicity – The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition Level of Consciousness – The way that a person is alert, oriented, attends questions and responds appropriately or not Range of Motion – The mobility for each joint, whether movement is deliberate, accurate, smooth and coordinated or not Symmetry – Body parts look bilaterally and are in relative proportion to each other Vitals Signs – Clinical measurements that indicate the state of the patient Inspection – Concentrated watching Palpation – Follows inspection; It applies your sense of touch to assess the patient Percussion – Follows palpation; It is tapping the person’s skin with short, sharp strokes to assess underlying structures Auscultation – Listening to sounds produced by the body, usually with a stethoscope Systematic Order – The order of assessment, from the head to the toes Mental Status – A persons emotional (feeling) and cognitive (knowing) functions Position – The way a person is sitting or standing Dress – The clothing the patient is wearing; is it appropriate for the climate, clean, fits well, etc. Sexual Development – The development of the patient sexually; is it appropriate for gender and age Nutrition – The way the person’s weight appears to their height, and the distribution of body fat....
