HISTORY
In1945,a“trainingschool”forpracticalnurseswas establishedatNewYorkCity’sHospitalforJoint DiseaseswhenitwaslocatedinHarlem.In1955, aftertheschoolreceivedagrantfromtheHelene FuldHealthFoundation,theHospitalnamedthe school“TheHeleneFuldSchoolofNursing.”Dr. LeonhardFelixFuld,aNewYorkCitypublichealth advocateandphilanthropist,andhissister, Florentine,createdthefoundationinmemoryof theirmother,HeleneSchwabFuld,ahealthcare crusaderinthe1880’s.
HeleneFuldCollegeofNursinghasalwaysbeenat theforefrontofnursingeducation.In1964,the schoolstartedthefirstprograminthecountryfor licensedpracticalnursestobecomediploma registerednurses.In1975,whenitreceivedits permanentcharterfromNewYorkStatewiththe authoritytoconfertheAssociateinAppliedScience degreeinnursing,theschoolbecameoneofthefirst hospital‐basedschoolsinthecountrytoofferthe associatedegree.In1981,HeleneFuldalsobecame thefirsthospital‐basedassociatedegreeprogramto beaccreditedbytheNationalLeagueforNursing andin1988,itbecamethefirsthospital‐based nursingschooltobecomeaccreditedbytheMiddle StatesCommissiononHigherEducation.
HELENEFULD COLLEGEOFNURSING VISIONSTATEMENT TheCollege’svisionistobenationallyrecognized forexcellenceinnursingeducation,andtobenoted forhavingcomprehensive,innovativeacademic programsthatareresponsivetothehealthcare challengesofthefuture.
InOctober1978,theoriginalpracticalnursing programterminatedaftereducatingalmost300 practicalnurses.TheHospitalforJointDiseases becameknownasJointDiseasesNorthGeneral Hospitalin1979andwasthenrenamedNorth GeneralHospitalin1990.InFebruary1996,withthe permissionoftheBoardofRegentsoftheUniversity oftheStateofNewYork,thename“HeleneFuld SchoolofNursing”waschangedto“HeleneFuld CollegeofNursing.”Itwasfeltthatthisnamebetter reflectedtheCollege'sstandingasaninstitutionof highereducation.
MISSIONSTATEMENT HeleneFuldCollegeofNursingisanindependent single‐purposeinstitution.Itsmissionistoprovide theopportunity,throughacareer‐ladderapproach, forindividualstoenhancetheireducationand improvetheirnursingpractice.TheCollege endeavorstoproducehighqualityandtechnically adaptablenurseswhoareabletofunctioneffectively inachangingsociety. 1

GraduatesoftheLPNtoRNprogramareawardedan AssociateinAppliedScience(AAS)degreeandare preparedtopasstheNCLEX‐RNexamination requiredbytheNationalCouncilofStateBoardsof NursingandtheNewYorkStateEducation Department,DivisionofProfessionalLicensing Services.Graduatespracticewithinthecontextof theNewYorkStateDefinitionofRegistered ProfessionalNursingandtheNationalLeaguefor Nursing’sOutcomesandCompetenciesfor GraduatesofAssociateDegreeNursingPrograms
InJuly2007,theCollegeseparatedfromNorth GeneralHospitalandwasestablishedasan independentnot‐for‐profitCollegeunderthe authorityoftheNewYorkStateBoardofRegents. Inearly2012,theCollegereceivedapprovalfromthe NewYorkStateDepartmentofEducationtoconfer theBachelorofSciencedegreeonregisterednurses. Thedegreeemphasizesenvironmentalurbanhealth nursing.
(2012).1 TheupperdivisionBachelorofScienceprogram(RN toBS)providesopportunitiesforstrengtheningthe registerednurse’sprofessionalpracticeandservesas thefoundationforcareeradvancement.Graduatesof theupperdivisionnursingprogramareawardeda BachelorofScience(BS)degreewithafocuson environmentalurbanhealthnursing.
INSTITUTIONALPROFILE TheCollegeislocatedinHarlem,oneofthemost dynamicandrevitalizedcommunitiesinNewYork City.Easilyaccessiblefromallboroughs,adjacent countiesandNewJersey,theCollegedrawsstudents fromalloftheseareasandisconvenientlyreached bysubway,busorcar.Someout‐of‐statenurses makehousingarrangementsinNewYorkCityin ordertoattendtheCollegeonacommutingbasisas theCollegehasnoresidencefacilities. Toaccommodatetheneedsofstudents,classesare heldfrom8:00a.m.to9:00p.m.,Mondaysthrough Fridays.Clinicalclassesareheldbetween8:00a.m. and4:30p.m.TuesdaysthroughSundays.Evening classesaregenerallyheldbetweenthehoursof4:00
Currently,thereareapproximately450full‐and part‐timestudentsenrolledintheassociatedegree andupperdivisionbaccalaureateprograms.

ENVIRONMENT Environmentisdefinedasallconditions, circumstances,andinfluencessurroundingand affectingthedevelopmentandbehaviorofpersons andgroups. HEALTH Healthisdefinedasastateandaprocessofbeing andbecominganintegratedandwholehuman being.Healthisareflectionofadaptationthatis influencedbythenatureofexternalaswellas internalenvironmentalstressors.Healthis influencedbyanindividual’sadaptationtostressors. Anindividual’sresponsetostressorsmaybeadaptive and/orineffectiveinmeetingbasicneedsandwill determinetheneedfornursingintervention.
NURSING Nursingisthescienceandpracticethatpromotesa person’sadaptationtoachieveintegrationwith his/herenvironmentduringhealthandillness.The goalofnursingistopromoteadaptationina person’sphysiologicalandpsychosocialmodes, therebycontributingtotheperson’shealth,quality oflifeand/ordyingwithdignity.Nursesintervenein situationswhenthepersonexhibitsactualor potentialineffectiveresponsestoenvironmental stimulibyutilizingthenursingprocess.
NURSINGEDUCATION Thefacultybelievethatallpersonsareentitledto optimumhealthcare.Thefacultybelievethisisa basichumanright,whichshouldbecomeoneofour nation'shigh‐prioritygoals.Thefacultybelievethat nursingisessentialtothehealthdeliverysystemin achievingthisgoal.Sincemodernnursing encompassesanincreasinglybroadrangeof knowledgeandskills,itcanbestfulfillitsobligations tosocietybypreparingdifferentlevelsofnurses.

Thelicensedpracticalnurse,underthedirection ofaregisterednurse,ispreparedtogivebasic nursingcare.Thefacultybelieveknowledge acquiredbythepracticalnurseisbasictoall nursing.Whenverifiedbylicensureandskills competency,practicalnursingconstitutesavalid basisforawardingadvancedstandingtopersons whowishtocontinuetheirstudiestowardsthe associatedegreeinnursing. TheassociatedegreegraduatefromHeleneFuld CollegeofNursingpossessesknowledgedrawn fromthebiophysicalandpsychosocialsciences andthehumanities.Asaparticipatingmember ofthehealthcareteam,thegraduateisableto applythisknowledgetothenursingprocessin thecareofdiverseclientpopulations. THENURSINGPROCESS Thenursingprocessisaproblem‐solvingapproach forgatheringdata,identifyingcapacitiesandneeds ofthehumanadaptivesystem,selectingand implementingapproachesfornursingcare,and evaluatingtheoutcomeofcareprovided.The nursingprocessisusedasaframeworkforclinical decisionmakingforsafe,effectivedeliveryofcare.
