Description

Surname 1 Jose Ortiz “Hills Like White Elephants” Discussion 1. Hills Like White Elephants is based on a discussion between a man and woman as they wait for a train. The setting, a train station, as well as its surroundings, is symbolic of the different choices on the issues discussed. The author explains that “…. the station was between two lines of rails in the sun” (1). I think that each of the tracks on the two sides of the station represents a single choice. One side has tracks running through green landscape with trees and grain fields. This is viewed as a paradise. Relating the setting to the question of abortion, this side symbolizes the pro-abortion choice. The choice will allow individuals to travel and enjoy love as they have no responsibilities. The other side that has dry and has whitish color represents the choice not to have abortion. The whitish color represents unexpected gifts in life, as individuals take responsibilities. The barrenness refers the responsibilities associated with parenthood. 2. The short story is a representation of the lives of the couple where their personal conflicts are unveiled. Hemingway uses the setting, symbolism, as well as the dialogue between the two to communicate the battle without addressing it directly. From their conversation, it is assertive that as a couple, the two are required to make choices. The girl’s first question, “what should we drink?” first unveils that their lives are connected where they have to make choices together. After considering the weather condition, the two agree to drink beer. The representation discloses the various conflicts in their lives where after a discussion they reach a standard solution. Moreover, the train station, as well as its surrounding, presents distinct choices. The tracks may be considered as symbols where different decisions lead to distinct destinations. Despite their conflicts, the couple require

Surname 2 to discuss to come up with the best choice. Using time, setting as well as, symbolism, the author represents the conflicts as well as dilemmas between the couple. 3. Although the author does not share full information about the fate of the couple, I think the woman surrenders to her husband’s wish to have an abortion. Even after their disagreements, the two have reached a collective decision. The author elaborates that “she was sitting at the table and smiled at him” (3), showing that their strife had been resolved. Moreover, the man asks the woman how the girl feels where she says she is well. It is, therefore, apparent that the couple decides to have an abortion to avoid responsibilities and to continue enjoying life. Works Cited Hemingway, Ernest. "Hills like white elephants."
