Description

Historical Investigation Proposal Research Topic The crossing of the Red Sea Research Question If the parting of the Red Sea take place, how did it occur? The question implies inquiry and/or investigation / debate / argumentation / contestability. Supporting question 1. What are the different theories supporting the parting of the red sea? And can they be proven? 2. If the parting of the red sea took place, how did they cross it in time? 3. What theories of the parting of the red sea have changed over time? (Change in continuity) Methodology (250-300 words) Through reading various sources, such as Secondary Data Analysis / Archival Study. I will achieve a high level of understanding as well as able to view the different arguments debated about the topic. The story tells of the escape of the Israelites, led by Moses, from the pursuing Egyptians, as recounted in the Book of Exodus. Moses holds out his staff and God parts the waters of the Yam Suph (Reed Sea). The Israelites walk through on the dry ground and cross the sea, followed by the Egyptian army. Once the Israelites have safely crossed Moses lifts his arms again, the sea closes, and the Egyptians are drowned. However, no archaeological, scholarly verified evidence has been found that confirms the crossing of the Red Sea ever took place. Given the lack of evidence for the biblical account, some researchers have searched for explanations as to what may have inspired the biblical authors' narrative, or to provide evidence for a natural explanation that is so rare that the timing could be considered miraculous. One explanation is that the Israelites and Egyptians experienced a mirage, a commonly occurring natural phenomenon in deserts (and mirages themselves may have been considered supernatural). Each group may have believed the other to have been submerged in water, resulting in the Egyptians assuming the Israelites drowned and thus called off the pursuit. Some have claimed that the parting of the Red Sea and the Plagues of Egypt were natural events caused by a single natural disaster, a huge volcanic eruption on the Greek island of Santorini in the 16th century BC. A natural explanation for how a temporary path across the Red Sea could have been revealed. It involves the tide, a natural phenomenon that would have fit nicely into a well-thought-out plan by Moses, because Moses would have been able to predict when it would happen. Argument/s or opposing viewpoints you will be making. Position A: That the eruption of the Santorini volcano is the reasoning behind the parting of the red sea. This is a Very popular opinion. Position B: A wind set down caused the parting. Simulations by US scientists show how the movement of wind could have opened a land bridge at one location. Position C: Moses relied on his knowledge of local tidal patterns.

School of thought #1 what it is, what makes it credible and how popular it is?...
