Informative Speech Outline Template Name: Randal Crutcher Subject: Honey Bees Specific Purpose: To inform the audience on the benefits and challenges of Honey bees and the small conservations steps everyone can make to help the bees survive. Central Idea: Globally there are more honey bees than other types of bees and pollinating insects, so it is world’s most important pollinator of food crops. It is estimated that one-third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by honey bees. Introduction Einstein believed that honey bees, were not just a beneficial insect but a species that is critical for human survival. I.

I have been a beekeeper for 5-6 years. During this time, I have attended workshops at The University of Florida’s Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab with Dr. Jamie Ellis. (world renown entomologist and Honey Bee guru) I have read thousands of pages of literature on the subject; my favorite book is “The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture. (1877 41st edition) Studying and working with bees has given me a unique opportunity to learn a tremendous amount from them; about themselves and about our environment.

Today, I will discuss a few benefits, challenges and small conservation steps you can make to help the bees.

Body I.

Honey bees are the only insect that produce a food product (honey) that humans consume. They also have an indirect affect on food production via pollination.

a.

I got into beekeeping because my orchard was not producing like I had expected. After introducing bees, the fruit production on my trees has increases tenfold.

food, over 70 are pollinated by bees.” -United Nations (Nichols)

Transition: Now that you understand the important role the of honey bee, I will explain some of the challenges it faces today.

The honey bees are experiencing a run of bad luck. Between pesticides, fungus, mite

infestations, natural disasters, and global warming they just can't catch a break.

a.

The use of neonicotinoids as well as other pesticides, insecticides and herbicides has been closely associated with a decline in pollinators. Honey bee numbers in the US and UK have dropped by around 50 per cent in the last 25 years. The active ingredient in Roundup glyphosate has been outlawed in France due to its association with Colony Collapse Disorder. (France)

b. Varroa destructor (Varroa mite) is an external parasitic mite that attacks and

feeds on the honey bees. The disease caused by the mites is called varroosis. Varroa is a vector for at least five debilitating bee viruses, a significant mite infestation leads to the death of a honey bee colony. (Ramsey)

c.

Transition: Now that I have explained a few of the challenges honey bees face, I will tell you why and how you can help.

III.

The simple fact is, if bees didn’t exist, neither would humans. a.

By planting a bee garden, you can create a habitat corridor with plants that are rich in pollen and nectar. You don’t need a ton of space to grow bee-friendly plants — gardens can be established in window boxes, flower pots and planters, and across yards.

b. Avoid treating your garden and yard with synthetics. Instead, use organic products

and natural solutions such compost to aid soil health and adding beneficial insects that keep pests away like ladybugs and praying mantises.Embrace the clover and dandelions. Conclusion I.

To sum up; humans and honey bees need each other more now than ever.

II.

Humans benefit tremendously from the work of honey bees. Both humans and honey bees face challenges, the other species can help overcome. The lives of billions of people depend on health and survival of this underappreciated insect.

The honey bee is the world’s most important pollinator of food crops, one in every three bites of food is the result of the honey bee.

If a honey bee earned minimum wage, a pint jar of honey would cost $182,000 dollars. “One can no more approach people without love than one can approach bees without care. Such is the quality of bees.” -Leo Tolstoy
