How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife By Manuel E. Arguilla Author - Manuel Arguilla was an Ilocano writer in English, patriot, and martyr who lived from 1911 until 1944. His highly anthologized short story "How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife," which received first prize in the Commonwealth Literary Contest in 1940, is the primary narrative in the collection "How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife and Other Short Stories." Setting - Nagrebcan, Bauang La Union Characters – ● Leon/Noel - Maria's husband, older brother of Baldo ● Maria - Leon's wife ● Baldo - Leon's younger brother, also the narrator of this story ● Mother and Father of Leon and Baldo ● Aurelia - Leon and Baldo's younger sister ● Labang - the carabao Theme - It is vital to make compromises during the voyage. Leon and his wife arrived in the country and met Leon's brother for the first time in the story. They took an unusual path home for Leon, but it was a test for the wife to see whether she could stand up to the sacrifices she had made and meet her new family. The wife is put to the test throughout the novel. Baldo and his older brother Leon were riding in a carratela, ready for their visitor. Baldo was awestruck by the beauty of his older brother's bride, Maria, as he describes their journey to their house in Nagrebcan. Maria was nervous about seeing Leon and Baldo's parents for the first time, but on the walk home, she saw the disparities between the lives of the people who lived there and the lives of the people who lived in the city where she met and fell in love with Leon. Plot – Exposition: The story began when the wife took a short, delicate step down to the Carretela of Ca Celin. She was tall and had a gorgeous appearance. With a smile on her face, she glanced up at Leon, her brow level with his." When Leon introduced Maria as his wife to his younger brother, Baldo, he was unsure if his father would approve of her. He wonders if Maria will be able to survive or fit in in a barrio or rural area rather than the city where she grew up.
