What is sexual violence Sexual violence is when a person engages in sexual behavior without first obtaining or freely giving consent. It is a severe public health issue in the world, that has far-reaching consequences for long-term health, opportunity, and well-being. Sexual violence affects people of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages in every community. Sexual violence can be experienced or perpetrated by anyone.
Do’s Responsible- Be responsible about your sexual life. Recognize- Recognize that sexual violence will not end until men become part of the solution. Educate- Be open about sexual education. Plan- Have a plan before you go out, and to stay connected to the people you trust. Teach- Teach everyone you know about the myths and realities of sexual violence. Support- Support women and men working to end sexual violence by volunteering your time, donating money, and/or lobbying legislators.
Don’t’s Blame- Do not blame victims of violence perpetrated against them. Drug- do not use drugs. Be aware that alcohol and drugs are often related to acquaintance rape. Secluded - do not go to secluded places where could be vulnerable for rape Jokes- do not utter rape jokes.
Effective interventions to prevent sexual violence Individual- level intervention, incorporate equality and respect-promoting education and life skills training. Relationship-level intervention, incorporate parental supervision, peer initiatives, and training to foster healthy relationships. Community-level intervention, incorporate communal characters that deter sexual assault, as well as social conventions and social marketing activities.
Policy-level intervention, incorporate the decrease of social and economic imbalances in societies which contribute to sexual violence.
