Description

Memorandum To: General Manager, River Rock Grill From: Sarah Marasco, Human Resources Date: March 5th, 2022 Re: Orientation, Performance Assessment and Wages

This memo aims at establishing topics that should be covered during the orientation process for successful candidates for the server position at the River Rock Grill, as well as the training objectives, and how we will measure the results of the orientation process. Secondly this memo will also outline the three aspects of the position on which you should assess the workers performance for this position. Lastly will be a recommendation for wages and benefits that should be provided for the position to attract top talent.

Orientation The three topics that should be included in the orientation process for the server position are listed below. 

Welcoming to the team, this will show appreciation and will create a positive first impression. Making the new employee feel welcome will influence a positive relationship with the entire team and allow for an error free workflow with the team supporting one another. This should be conducted on the first day prior to any further trainings and effectiveness will be measured by management observation of team integration. Operational tasks will include the knowledge to complete the expectations for operating the register and computer systems. This training will take place during the first 2 weeks of employment with direct manager supervision. Follow up by the floor manager over the next 2 weeks will ensure that understanding and execution is at standard. Certifications, including Proserv liquor handling licensing[ CITATION Alb22 \l 1033 ] and Safe Food Handling through AHS[ CITATION Can22 \l 1033 ]. This will be completed within the first 4 weeks of employment and paid for by the company. Follow up will be ongoing and watched by management to ensure standards are followed consistently to keep guests safe.

To measure the success of the orientation training objectives there will be a task list to check which will include a timeline and who is responsible for each task. The River Rock Grill will then keep a completed checklist in the employee file should training need to be revisited. The new employees will be provided with printed material regarding organizational information, vision, and mission statements along with benefit information. This should be read during the first 2 weeks of employment and the employee will keep this document should they need to follow-up on any information.

Performance Assessment The following topics are crucial to assess the employee’s performance for their first 3 months of employment:   

Knowledge of standards and ability to execute those standards. Certification in food service safety and pro serve liquor certification and adherence to those trainings. Learning plan relating to the job covering operational, customer service standards and menu knowledge.

Performance expectations for each aspect should be consistent across all subjects to ensure a proper training experience and giving the employee the skills needed to function independent of direct supervision within 3 months. Using the checklist for training orientation along with customer feedback and management observations will enable a thorough understanding of the progress the employee makes. The possibility of reduced training due to shifting priorities as the employee gains knowledge is a real possibility and following the orientation plan is crucial. At the end of the probationary period employees should be given a chance to raise their concerns and extend the training period as needed.

Wages and Benefits The average hourly wage for this job in Alberta is $15 per hour[ CITATION Gov22 \l 1033 ]. To remain competitive in the industry, the recommended starting wage for the server position should be slightly higher than the provincial average. Increasing the starting wage to $16 per hour would allow us to attract top talent and increase the talent pool in which to select from. Providing benefits to the part time position in the form of sick time with an allotment of 5 days per calendar year without needing a doctor’s note will increase employee loyalty. By ensuring that all current employees are given a similar merit raise and benefits will ensure team cohesiveness.
