Unit of Study Information

Evidence-based health care is the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individuals or the delivery of health services. This unit will introduce you to evidence based health care by developing your understanding of knowledge and evidence, and critical appraisal skills to inform your decision making in health care policy and practice. 2.1 Prerequisites and assumed knowledge Prerequisites: HSBH1007 OR HSBH2007 2.2 Attendance Requirements Lectures: Tuesdays 2–4pm, 173 Carslaw Lecture Theatre, Camperdown. Students are expected to attend two hours of lectures in Weeks 1-8, and 10-13. In Week 9 there

is no face-to-face lecture but all students are expected to participate in an online workshop. Lectures provide opportunities to engage students in specific topics, present key concepts and examples, and discuss how each topic fits into the overall unit of study. Administrative announcements will be made at the beginning of lectures. You are strongly advised to actively participate in lectures, and to complete the related readings and activities provided to enhance your knowledge and understanding of key concepts. Material discussed in the lectures is regarded as having been provided to all students in this unit. Tutorials – Tuesdays as per your personal timetables (weeks 2-8, 10-13) Tutorials provide time and opportunity to discuss, ask questions and broaden your understanding about the latest lecture(s), and to develop the knowledge and skills required to achieve the intended learning outcomes and complete the assessment tasks for this unit. The teaching and learning processes in this unit emphasise learning in groups, as well as individually. Your active preparation and participation in tutorials is essential for the successful completion of this unit. Tutorials start in Week 2. The time and venue will be indicated on your personal timetables. The tutorial in Week 9 will be online. You are expected to attend the scheduled tutorial classes in this Unit. It is very important that you attend your allocated class as we are unable to oversubscribe students to tutorial classes. If you miss MORE THAN TWO TUTORIALS you will need to apply for Special Consideration to explain your absence. Part I of the first assessment task will be completed during the Week 3 tutorial. Failure to attend and submit work in the scheduled tutorial will result in a mark of zero for the task, unless special consideration is approved.
