Description

Elizabeth Miano Dr. Shreck 11/24/18 Chapter 11 activities Refection questions: 1. Why do you think Kyles parents reacted the way they did? Is their reaction typical of parents who are told that their child might have a disability? If so, how? I think his parents reacted the way they did because they made assumptions about Kates intentions with wanting to have him tested. While its never an easy discussion to have with parents, I don’t believe their response was typical. Most parents want to help their children in any way possible, and if that means testing, they’re willing to do so, or at least hear out the teachers reasoning. 2. What are Kyle’s parents’ legal rights in this situation? If Kate believes that Kyle needs special services, can testing and subsequent placement be done without their permission? They have legal right to determine what happens to their son in the school setting and have the legal right to refuse testing. No testing can be done without parental consent. 3. How should Kate proceed with the barkers after this conference? Should she involve anyone else in the situation? If so, who? What steps should be taken to repair the homeschool relationship? If testing determines that special placement is needed, how can Kate work effectively with the Barkers through the IEP process? Kate should give the Barkers time to calm down and process, then speak wit her principal about how to proceed with the situation. Steps should be taken for better communication both from the home and

the school to figure out a solution to help Kyle. Kate can have the parents decide as much of what goes in the IEP as possible and review with them so they are all clear on the content of the IEP and what steps are to be taken to help Kyle. Website: Council for Exceptional Children This website is a wonderful resource for parents with children with exceptionalities. It provides information about those exceptionalities, articles, and outside resources to help parents learn about their child and teaches them how to adapt their home life to help assist the child as much as possible. I will definitely utilize this resource in my classroom. Wrightslaw This website is a great tool for parents, educators and administrators for children with exceptionalities to learn their rights and how they can help each child. Often when parents find out they have a child with exceptionalities they do not know or understand the rights that they have and the rights the school has, so this resource is a great educational tool to help families and educators be much more comfortable about the position they are in....
