Being in my fourth semester at CCAC Boyce, I have taken a couple of cybersecurity class so far, them being Network Security, Cyber Vulnerability & Risks and Intrusion Detection & Prevention. From these classes I learned a lot, from Cyber Vulnerability and Risks I learned about phishing websites/emails and how to find out what is safe to click on. Also, from that same class I learned about finding out about network traffic and figuring out what all is using the same Wi-Fi connection, later learning to reduce what should be running on it even when disconnected. Network Security showed me how to navigate Firewalls and learn how to set my own Firewall settings to better suit my personal or business needs. In Intrusion Detection & Prevention I learned what security mitigate attacks are and how to block new threats while figuring out solutions Some Cybersecurity problems, I have encountered at home are pretty common, slow connections, email phishing and harmful websites. Using Anti-Virus programs, I was able to protect my personal information from accidently clicking harmful emails or websites. Using a program called Nmap I was able to see what all is connected to my network connection in which allowed me to disconnect any that shouldn’t be connected. Also, just by taking some classes and learning about email phishing I learned how to tell them apart and block them from my email. I have helped a few people with this knowledge but even without it I was sure to be bothered by my parents and in-laws who seem to have little to none technology knowledge. Although these classes have really made it a lot easier to help them with it.
