Importance of Juan Luna and Fernando Amorsolo in Philippine History Looking at an art feels like a time machine once you learned about the background story of every painting and novels of different artists and heroes, it allows us to understand their life and environment. Art tells history and it helps us gain more knowledge about their fight and passion. Two of most significant artists in Philippine history are Juan Luna with his famous painting Spolarium and Fernando Amorsolo with over 10,000 paintings done over his lifetime. Juan Luna is one of the prominent Filipino artists in the Philippines his arts. He largely regarded as the Philippines' best and most influential painter, with paintings on display in several of the country's most prominent museums, including the National Museum and the Lopez Museum. Juan was not just an artist, he was a revolutionary and influential political activist who was an active participant in the Philippine Revolution that took place in the late 19th century. His Spoliarium had painted a distinct image and persona of an open conflict between reason and idealism, which was accompanied by justice, fanaticism, and cases of prejudice. Fernando Amorsolo is one of the most prominent Filipino painters to influence the nation even after his death. Throughout WWII, Fernando's art and painting productivity were unaffected, and he emerged as one of the best wartime artists. Don Alonso Ongpin, a powerful Philippine collector, commissioned him to paint a picture of Gen. Douglas McArthur in his absence, which exposed Fernando to a variety of hazards and perils. During this time, he painted several Japanese occupation troops as well as some self-portraits. In 1948, he displayed his wartime paintings at the Malacanang Presidential Palace at an exhibition. Amorsolo was renowned as "The Painter of Philippines Sunlight" because his lit landscapes depicted traditional Filipino customs, culture, fiestas, and everyday vocations such as rice farming and mango picking. His pastoral works contributed to the development of Filipino national identity by presenting "an imagined feeling of nationhood in juxtaposition to American colonial control.

When it comes to the arts, Juan Luna is truly a Filipino pride. He is the first Filipino to have his paintings and art forms recognized abroad. The Spoliarium, which is genuinely an overwhelming style of art, is one of his best works. Some said that just looking at it left them speechless. It makes you proud to be a Filipino and proves that Filipinos can do incredible things. Juan Luna utilized this as a means of inadvertently informing the Filipinos of their suffering at the hands of the Spaniards, who treat them similarly to Roman gladiators. He employed a formal art technique that sets up the different images without the usage of lines. The second feature is the geometric shape, which is distinguished by the many things present. The organic contours of the humans also contribute to the painting's volume. The third aspect is how he manipulates the light to demonstrate its worth. Finally, the colors he employed were sorrowful and somber, which helped to convey the painting's tone and sentiment. Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, sprawls across a beautiful bed in the heart of a magnificent palace filled with reliefs and marble statues, wearing only a portion of an exquisite blue and gold embroidered robe. Both scenes feature relief panels and a red and gray marble floor, and Cleopatra wears the same gorgeous brocade gown, jewels girdle, and crown. Juan Luna's exquisite brushwork and jewel-like palette, along with a variety of evocative motions and expressions from the artist's illustrated treatise on painting, bring the setting to life. In comparison to Amorsolo's paintings, he frequently used a style that is a mix of realistic and representational art, which makes these two works breathtakingly gorgeous. He created artwork in the form of a two-dimensional painting. Fernando Amorsolo's tremendous appeal stemmed from his luminous and romanticized presentation of Philippine genre and landscape subjects, both during his lifetime and afterward. “Defense of a Filipina Woman's Honor,” one of his paintings, depicted a Filipino man wielding a bolo, prepared to save his wife and daughter from being raped by Japanese during World War II. “Dalagang Bukid," as it is known in the Philippines. It displays an image of a perfect young Filipina maiden with a pleasant grin, as though she appreciates the Philippine agricultural life. His use of strong colors creates the sensation that the artwork is alive. In contrast to Juan Luna's work, Fernando Amorsolo used natural light in his

paintings and invented the Chiaroscuro backlighting technique, which became his artistic hallmark and his most significant contribution to Philippine painting. As a result of his exposure to Western Impressionism, Amorsolo's style included the use of rapid, fragmented brushwork and rich impasto with a concentration on landscapes and everyday subjects Based on my observations, the two artists' artworks have different topics and motivations. Juan Luna's artwork expresses his socio-cultural and political ideas, as well as his affections and aspirations. In his painting Spolarium, he depicts the Filipinos' condition under the Spaniards. He discusses how colonizers repressed and persecuted Filipinos. While Fernando Amorsolo's paintings are influenced by rural life, they are continuously focused on displaying the "vibrant tropical Philippine sunlight," as art historian Eric Torres mentions, Amorsolo created landscapes that allegedly reflect the "simple and happy life" of farmers in the provinces.
