Facts About Mitosis...

Description

Important Facts About Mitosis Important facts about Mitosis: (Take notes and study for your final lab practical.) 

Human Somatic cells (body cells, such as a skin cell) have 46 total chromosomes (23 total pairs)

Human Gametes (sex cells) have a total of 23 total chromosomes and they divide through a process called Meiosis. In this lab, we are only talking about somatic cells that are dividing through Mitosis.

The somatic cell undergoes Mitosis when the cell is ready to divide and will replicate (copy) its normal 46 chromosomes to make 92. The cell will go through Mitosis and divide those 92 chromosome into 2 cells each containing 46 chromosomes.

An acronym to help remember the phases is I-PMAT-C

I=Interphase- When the cell is growing and living it's life. This is when the cell replicates(copies) its chromosomes

P=Prophase- When the cell is preparing to divide. The nuclear membrane starts to fall apart and the chromatin condenses in the center of the nucleus.

M=Metaphase-When the chromosomes line up in the middle. The Spindle fibers will attach at the centromeres .

A=Anaphase-When the chromosomes are pulled apart into sister chromatids. (46 going in one direction and 46 going in the other direction.

T=Telephase- When the 2 nuclear membranes begin to reform, each having 46 chromosomes.

C=Cytokinesis-When the cell membrane divides into 2 separate cells each having 46 chromosomes. Cell division is complete at this moment and you have 2 new cells....
