IN4004 – Insurance Law & Claims Week 1 – Lecture 1

This was an intro lecture. Some notes regarding the assessments and exams. Midterm – this will be an in class assessment, worth 20% of your final grade. It will be a written multiple choice exam. Done in week 8.

Group Essay – this will be in groups of 3 and decided by the lecturer in week 3. Due week 9. The topic for this will be the same for everyone – the topic is on sulis. This essay is worth 20% of your final grade. There is an online database called “Lexis” which Robert mentioned – where he wants most researched searched on.

Final exam – the final exam will be 2.5 hours. It is worth 60% of your final grade. The exam will consist of 4 out of 6 essay questions.

Definitions of words he will refer to often.      

Indemnify – this is the insurers obligation to which they need to pay the insured out if there is means to. The compensation for loss or damages. Underwriter Plaintiff – this is the person who has made the claim for a case in court. In case studies, the plaintiff will always be mentioned first. Defendant - they are defending their case in court Insurer – this the company which is issuing the insurance coverage, who takes on the insurable risk. Insured – this is the individual who is at risk and is transferring their risk to an insurer. Once the risk is transferred they are known as insured....
