With that in mind: This Course Outline should be your go-to document for when you have questions. Before emailing me with a question, please carefully and thoroughly review this Course Outline. Most of the process questions you have are already answered here. • For the up-to-date announcements, check the Blackboard Announcements page often. This is where I will post additional information about assignments, exams, reminders, mentorship, and FAQs in an effort to keep everyone on the same page. Be sure to look there if you have not received an individual response email. • If you would like a more immediate response, I highly recommend attending my live Virtual Office Hours. These are dedicated times that I have reserved for you, so you

do not feel alone or cast adrift. If you feel even a little anxious while waiting for an email response, please visit me during my Virtual Office Hours. Talking is faster than typing, and I look forward to “seeing” you! For course-related inquiries: Please use [email protected] for all general course related inquiries or email your GA for any questions that you have about the course, content, assignments, etc. [email protected] is ONLY for students enrolled in PSYC-1150 Section 1 and will reach myself and our administrative GAs. The GAs and I manage this email account very frequently. In your emails, please do the following: Refer to me as Dr. Soucie, and your GAs by their first name, and close the email with your full name, student ID#, and the course and section in which you are enrolled (1150-01). However, if you would like to contact the GA that is assigned to you specifically, please email them directly with your questions. • If you have any questions about mentorship, please email Marissa Rakus, [email protected] • For sensitive matters that you do not wish to share with the GAs, please use my faculty email [email protected] Unless you explicitly request that I not share an email with the GAs (e.g., due to a conflict of interest), I may redirect your inquiry to the course email account. • Please be patient. It is impossible for us to check and respond to student emails during every hour of every day. I and your GAs will respond to your emails as quickly as we can. If you do not hear back within 48 hours, and your inquiry has not been addressed on the Blackboard Announcements or in this Course Outline, please resend your email. A problem may have occurred. Even better, attend our live Virtual Office Hours. • Your GAs handle all grading and accounting. For immediate help with these issues, attend their listed Virtual Office Hours. Second best is to contact them using either the course email or their specific email. • Do not wait to email a question about the exam, an assignment, or class just before these things occur. If you do, due to high email volume around these times, your question could go unanswered until it is too late! • Always be courteous, undemanding, and respectful in all your email correspondence. It is far easier to catch flies with honey. • Practice good writing. In your emails, try to avoid text messaging ‘shorts’ and slang, bad grammar, and avoidable spelling mistakes. No need to be too obsessive about this with me, but it’s a good general guideline. • Only use your UWindsor address. Only emails sent from your UWindsor address will be responded to, per official university policy. •

Breakdown of Assessments: Quizzes (9%). For each course module/week, you will have a quiz. Each quiz is out of 25 points. Weekly quizzes will be available starting Monday, at 10am and will expire on Fridays at 5:00 pm sharp. You will have 60 minutes to complete the quiz. If you miss a deadline for a quiz, it cannot be made up for any reason. If you miss a quiz, consider available opportunities for earning bonus points (see ‘Bonus Points’ below). Midterm Exam (25%) The midterm exam will be available on Blackboard from 10AM to 5:00PM, on Friday, October 22nd. You will have 120 minutes (2 hours) to complete the exam, and Blackboard will self-submit once your time expires.

8

Questions will be presented in random order, one at a time on the screen. You will also be able to go back and double check your answers before you submit (time permitting). If you are not finished the exam by this time, you will NOT be able to finish it. This means that you should make absolutely sure to start with plenty of time to finish the exam before it expires, bearing in mind the potential for technical difficulties, etc. The exam will cover Chapters 1-3, and the lecture on APA referencing and will consist of 100 multiple choice questions, drawn randomly from a very large pool of items. Though “technically” not an open-book exam, it is fast paced, so you will want to make sure you are as prepared as you would be for an in-class exam. I and/or the GAs will be available live in the Blackboard Virtual Classroom during the exam in case you experience technical issues or have questions/comments. Major Assignment (20%). The Major Assignment is a written research paper. You are asked to select a topic from a list of approved topics and write a 6–8-page research paper in APA format. This paper is intended to form a simplified version of the literature review portion of a research proposal. Further details about the Major Assignment can be found in Blackboard -> Resources. The assignment MUST be submitted on Blackboard by Wednesday, November 3, at 5PM. In fairness to all, if your assignment is submitted late, you lose 10% and another 10% each day it is late thereafter, weekends included. If your assignment is more than five days late, it will not be accepted, and you will get a 0%. Final Exam (40%); date TBD. Like the midterm exam, the final exam will be available on Blackboard from 10AM to 5:00PM and the date and time will be announced after it is assigned by the Registrar’s Office. I will notify you as soon as the registrar’s office notifies me. You will have 180 minutes (3 hours) to complete the final exam. Like the midterm, questions will be presented in random order, one at a time on the screen. You will also be able to go back and double check your answers If you are not done the exam by the expiry time (5pm), you will NOT be able to finish it. Blackboard will auto-submit your exam. Make absolutely sure to start with plenty of time to finish the exam before it expires, bearing in mind the potential for technical difficulties, etc. Aim to start the exam as soon as it is made available, or if you absolutely must, more than 3 hours before the expiry time. The final exam will be cumulative and will cover Chapters 1-7 and 11, and will consist of 165 multiple choice questions, drawn randomly from a very large pool of items. Again, this is fast paced, so be sure you are as prepared as you would be for an in-class exam. I and/or the GAs may be available live in a Blackboard Virtual Classroom during the exam in case you experience technical issues or have questions/comments. Mentor groups (6%). You will be expected to meet online with your mentor once a week on your assigned mentorship group day (either Tuesday or Thursday) from 10:30-11:20AM. Mentors will take attendance and note your participation (you have to engage or no points!) in these online group meetings. There will be 10 mentor meetings over the course of the term. If you participate in 7 or more of the meetings you will earn the full 6% credit. If you participate in less than 3 mentor group meetings you will receive a ZERO for this part of the course. Information about your specific mentor group can be found at Blackboard -> Mentor Meetings.

Policy on Make-up Exams. No make-up exams will be given unless you obtain permission directly from me at least one week BEFORE the scheduled exam time. Any unusual or unexpected circumstances that prevent you from taking the make-up exam before the other students’ scores are released need to be reported to me immediately, otherwise you may not be able to take the exam. I will set the date and time of the make-up exam, and it will be different from the original exam. If the conflict or unanticipated event occurs on the day of the exam, you or someone on your behalf must contact me BEFORE the exam, and you must provide proof of the reason for your absence (e.g., doctor’s note). To be fair to all students, exams will not be rescheduled for students who contact me after the exam has been written. There are no exceptions to this policy. For more information, please consult the FAHSS policy and procedures document posted under the Blackboard>Syllabus tab for more information about make-up exams.

My Statement on COVID-19 We have all spent the last 18+ months dealing with a tremendous amount of uncertainty and adapting our lives to ways of being that were hard to imagine in January of 2020. With the rise of the Delta variant and the potentiality of newer variants ever looming, we find that a year-and-a-half into this pandemic life can take an unexpected turn quite quickly. The impact of COVID has gone well beyond physical illness to impact all of us psychologically and socially; each person’s experience being both unique and far too common. As I approach this semester, I wanted to let you know the basic principles I am following to make sure that I am providing you with the best learn...
