Nhi Chung Patricia Brooks INRW 0420 4 May 2017 Is an Emerald Rarer Than a Diamond? Emeralds and diamonds are popular gemstones in a jewelry market and as gifts in marriage, various cultures, and countries; thus, people have praised and appreciated them for many years. Most people around the world have recognized that emeralds and diamonds could be potentially beneficial for their economy. There is some similarities between the two, such as their shapes, sizes, cuts, and qualities. However, there are some major difference between emeralds and diamonds that need to be pointed out due to the popular belief that leads to many misconceptions from people's assumption over the years. Thus, it is obvious that emeralds and diamonds are not the same when it comes to their price range, value, and a rarity. Emerald and diamond's price vary depending on how they were cut and polished by the lapidary, but more importantly, it comes down to their carat, or the weight measurement. For example, a single carat from an emerald can cost roughly up to $5,470.00. (Rosen, Seth I. "Are diamonds really rare? Myths and misconceptions about diamonds #diamonds." International Gem Society.) Whereas, a single carat from diamond can cost about $4,300.00 (Rosen), which is surprising for most people who have often assumed and expected that diamond is more expensive than an emerald or other gemstones. In this case, an emerald is more expensive than a diamond when it comes to their price range. According to Rosen, author of "Are diamonds really rare? Myths and misconceptions about diamonds," he has stated that ",… diamonds are very

costly, but not the most expensive gem in any size,…", which is undeniable due to its carats and sizes compared to emeralds or other gemstones. International Gem Society. N.p., n.d., www.gemsociety.org/article/are-diamonds-really-rare/. There is another important thing to consider; emeralds and diamonds are alike when it comes to their brilliant quality; however, there is a difference, which comes down to their respective value. On one hand, diamond is in fact, more valuable than an emerald because of its unique clarity (depending on its brightness), which has increased its grade significantly from I1 to IF (Included1 to Internally Flawless). According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), they have stated that ",… diamonds with inclusions,… can be easily seen by the unaided eye" ("Diamond Quality Factors"). On the other hand, an emerald's value is not as high as a diamond because of its lack of clarity, which could reduce its value greatly according to the level of treatment (different grading scale) from minor to significant. Again, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has stated, ",… when the inclusions have a negative effect on transparency and clarity, they [emeralds] also dramatically reduce value", which means that diamond's clarity is more significant than an emerald ("Emerald Quality Factors"). Most importantly, both emeralds and diamonds are unalike due to their rarity, which is rather complex because some experts argue and speculate that colors in gemstones can play a significant role in a jewelry market. For example, a diamond has grabbed most people's attention due to its colorless, dazzling, and brightness. Furthermore, they are the most common gemstones found on the planet Earth and a jewelry market, even though they are the hardest to find. In fact, an emerald has a unique, green color because of its elements, which is rather unusual, as Dr. Andrew A. Snelling said, ",… the color of an emerald is more highly valued than its clarity or

brilliance" ("Emeralds-Treasures from Catastrophe"). Therefore, an emerald considers rarer than a diamond when it comes to judging their colors. All in all, it is true to say that diamonds are more popular and more common than emeralds in the jewelry industry, marriage, and value. While that may be the case in television and magazine advertisements or name brands such as Kay Jewelers, Tiffany & Co., International Concepts (I.N.C), and so on, diamonds have always dominated the market, which makes it an iconic gemstone to the general public. Nevertheless, emeralds are rarer than diamonds when it comes to researching, observing, and analyzing its characteristics by various lapidaries, experts, and scientists. Therefore, emeralds and diamonds are dissimilar due to their price range, value, and a rarity, even though they are both highly praised for their appearance to consumers.
