Is modern technology always the best way to solve problems? Keven Silver (Yin shukun)

The past few decades have witnessed a boom in technological development. Technology is literally everywhere. A life without all these techs is beyond imagination. Some may think traditional ways are overwhelmed by technology. However, from my perspective, technology is definitely not perfect.

First and foremost, technology is merely a tool. It can only help us rather than do something by itself. When it comes to in-depth thinking and tasks related to consciousness, no technology can do a better job than ourselves. Furthermore, technology has its limitations. Especially during some emergencies, where probably no technology can reach us, traditional ways are the only ways and therefore the best ways. This situation happens constantly when our phone’s electricity is depleted, and we’re somewhat panic. So it is imperative to maintain and cultivate some primitive abilities. Besides, exercise works best using old fashion ways. Compared to using a treadmill, running in the countryside is a feast for the mind as well as the eyes. Let alone the much more nutritious air in the open. Additionally, products assimilated by technology lose creativeness. Take carpentry for example. The handicraft crafted by craftsman usually has a much higher price than one manufactured. Because it is the improvisation that makes the handicraft unique and irreplaceable.

History tells us that every new development in the technology has generated a chorus of utopian celebrations and a counter-chorus of dystopian jeremiads. On one hand, a travel to another country could take a life time but for the help of technology. Electronic appliances make our life much more efficient. And thanks to means of communication, people around the world are closer than ever. On the other hand, an excessive reliance on technology is detrimental. Technology is a double-edged sword, which means the more powerful it is, the more side-effects it might bring.

In all, technology is not omnipresent. And looking back from time to time can bring unimagined advantages and inspiration. Only by using technology rationally and keep traditional ways in mind can we settle every problems without taking a detour....
