PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action vasodilates the blood vessels which will reduce the hearts oxygen demand, pre-load and afterload.
Therapeutic Use Used primarily for preventing or treating chest pain (angina) that results from coronary artery disease. Isosorbide Dinitrate used only for prevention
Complications headache, reflex tachycardia, facial flushing, orthostatic hypotension, n/v, blurred vision, dry mouth, burning or tingling under tongue, Severe low BP is presented with cold/clammy skin, pulselessness, and fainting/dizziness.
Contraindications/Precautions Avoid tolerance by allowing at least 12 drug free hours a day in the dosing schedule. Nitrates have a short half-life of 5-7 minutes. Very suseptible to the first-pass effect.
Interactions
Medication Administration PO Maximum single daily dose: 240 mg.Take on empty stomach
Nursing Interventions Record angina, assess if pt. is taking any ED medications. Vitals, Assist pt. with ambulation or ADL’s due to Sx. Assess for facial flushing
antihypertensive medications, alcohol, erectile dysfunction meds, beta blockers
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Patient has no chest pain or decreased occurance
