Recent Developments in the Field of Database Technology Database technology can be defined as the technology that provides an internal representation (model) of the external world of interest. For example, the representation of a particular guest’s name, address, contact number, identification number, reservation ID, arrival date, departure date, room number, room rate in hotel reservation system or the representation of a particular customer ID, address, contact number, invoice number, product ID, quantity in billing system are some of the examples of database technology. Database Management System (DBMS) technology is regarded as one of the important aspects of computing environment today. Different kinds of business and scientific applications or wide variety of e-commerce and internet applications are supported by database management system. DBMS is an essential part of every organizations today since it can run several applications that hotels, banks, travel agencies, airlines, hospital and other organizations depend on for their operational activities. Over the span of last 30 years, relational database management system (RDBMS) has been established to be exceedingly adaptable and has advanced to meet the requirements of newer applications and the rapidly growing size and data complexities. However, the existing RDBMS technology cannot address all of the latest data-intensive applications like internet searches properly. Therefore, significant innovation in database technology is needed in order to overcome the drawbacks and limitations of present generation of database technology [ CITATION Feu10 \l 1033 ]. Looking back at the last 10 years, the previous versions of relational database management system have been evolved into mature database server technology with capability to support distributes applications an operate in diverse environment. Because of these developments, the necessities of most of the business applications are addressed by the present

generation of database technology. The advancement of sophisticated data management language SQL (Structured Query Language), theory of query optimization, and transaction management techniques are the major achievements of continuous research in database technology. According to Gates (2016), the current trends in database technology are databases that bridge SQL and NoSQL, databases in the Cloud / Platform as a Service (PaaS), an increased focus on security and automated management. Versatility is the newest trend in database management. Database products do not just rely on a single structure of database, but instead, use both NoSQL and SQL, providing the finest capabilities from both to the users. Another important development in the field of database technology is cloud database. A cloud database can be defined as a database service which is built and retrieved through a cloud platform. It serves many of the same functions as traditional database with the added flexibility of cloud computing. In order to implement the database, software is installed on a cloud infrastructure by the users. Cloud database environment model is categorized into two groups; they are traditional cloud model and Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS). As for traditional cloud model, the contents of the database operate on the infrastructure of the enterprises and the IT staff of the company will be responsible for any database errors or hitches and glitches, whereas DBaaS operates on the infrastructure of the service provider and any the content database will be run on the particular enterprise’s infrastructure and any mistakes or omission will fall into the shoulders of the service provider. The main benefits of adopting cloud database are ease of use, scalability, cost effectiveness and disaster recovery. Some of the top databases that most of the companies have adopted today are Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure SQL Database, Microsoft Azure Document DB, Cloud SQL by Google and Oracle Database as a Service [ CITATION Hac17 \l 1033 ].

The developers today are frequently moving their businesses to the cloud, and they are cautiously comparing the benefits and drawbacks of public cloud service infrastructures and private cloud service infrastructures. They are continuously doing research on the coordination of cloud services with the present infrastructures and applications. Another growing trend is automating database management. The main purpose of this tool and technique is the simplification of project workflow, provisioning, maintenance, patching, upgrades and updates. However, this trend may have limited practicality because of the requirement of human intervention in the database management. One of the major concerns in database management today is data security. The continuing breach of the retail database evidently reveals that the database administrators should work together with the IT security partners to make sure that all the data of the company are safe.
