Description

British literatures Übung- Session

Date: 27.11.2017

-characteristic for gothic literature -reflects on fears of society of the time (typical for Victorian time) -fear of science, although a lot of progress at that time -scientific progress was basically seen as a good thing -idea from degression linked to evolution and darwins origin of species -fear of insanity (hysteria) ->many insane people in vicotiran novels (Mad women in the attic- Jane Eyre) -dual nature of Dr. Jekyll, comes out through Mr. Hyde -interest in psychology at the time -fear of drug abuse (people smoked opium) -moderation was actually very important at the time -Mr Utterson has something degenerate about Mr Hyde (notions of biology OR face of satan) science vs. religion -lanyon has boundaries in his science, but Jekyll in contrast acts outside moral boundaries -respectable dr. Jekyll, middle class, doctor-> one had to have at least ONE servant, he does the unthinkable, does not think about consequences -represented as “Good Victorian gentleman” in the beginning, but always had dark urges -general respectability of people,, but nobody knows what people do behind closed curtains, he somehow wants to get rid of the dark but then completely lets lose -Utterson is not the narrator! It is an autodiegetic-authorical narrator who follows Utterson, he is the focaliser of this story! -he is the detective in the story and wants to find out what Jekyll has to do with this despicable mr hyde -utterson fulfils norms of society, respectable, very loyal friend, wants to save other people’s reputations, nonetheless invests into Mr Hyde and even blackmails, but is hero of the detective story (hero of the novel) Setting -haunted house/ laboratory in London --feeling of the uncanny and fog -night when murder occurs -slums are shown for all negative cities -ambiguity of Victorian society depicted in Jekyll and hyde -is mirrored by jekyll’s house which is an eary building to live in: big house ; Mr. Hyde even has a servant and he lives in a despicable area (Soho), “evil” neighbourhood lot of gothic settings -character of the villain has shifted: medical doctor -victim was usually damsel in distress, not existent; fear of victims is not present because there is none -people at that time were very interested in psychology
