Choose one of the following topics. Once you have chosen your topic, answer the questions below: Television watching habits, eating habits, exercise habits, homework habits, politeness or kindness habits, cleanliness habits. 1.

Imagine you are responsible to help a child (age 6-10) learn something specific in regard to the topic you selected. Writhe the specific habit that you and your partner will have the child learn. Cleanliness habits

2.

Write how you could use EACH of the four operant conditioning principles to have the child learn the habit you choose. A. Positive reinforcement

A way I would use positive reinforcement is whenever the child picks up a toy, give them a compliment and maybe a small piece of candy, and as they start to pick up more, repeat the same thing.

B.

Negative Reinforcement

Using negative reinforcement when the child doesn’t clean, you could use the complaining that you do asking the child to clean up, by taking it away (stopping) once the child cleans. This will show the child that if they clean, I will stop complaining about cleaning.

C.

Positive Punishment

For positive punishment, if they do not clean, I would give them a verbal scolding so that they realize if they do not clean they will be scolded and they will remember that the next time.

D.

Negative Punishment

For negative punishment, I would take time outside or watching tv away from the child. Once they clean, I would allow them to have time to do these things. Over time they will learn that if they clean then they will be able to go outside or watch tv.

3.

Which of the four strategies that you described in #2 would you and you partner select in order to help the child? Why? I would use positive reinforcement because I feel like that is the solution that would be most effective for the child. When a child sees how when they do something right (in this case cleaning) and that they will get positive words and a small treat, it will encourage them to keep doing that and to start doing more to get the compliments and treats.

Let’s Get Our Schedules Figured Out

Identify the schedule of reinforcement (FR, VR, FI, VI)

1. Frequent flyer program: getting a free flight after accumulating x number of flight miles. - FR 2. Fly fishing - VR 3. Receiving a good grade for reading x number of chapters of the book - FR 4. Athlete signs contract whereby his salary increases are renegotiated every three years. - FI 5. Playing Bingo - VI 6. Waiting for a taxi cab. - VR 7. Individuals collect bottles, cans, and other recyclables get payment for a specific amount of these items- FR 12. Number of “throws” to get a strike in bowling - VR 13. Getting clean clothes from the washing machine once the cycle is finished - FI 14. Fishing – VI, because in this instance you would not know how long (the time) it would take for you to catch a fish.
