JOB ANALYSIS - MEANING AND OBJECTIVES

Introduction JOB- A job is a role performed by a person in an organisation.A job is an assignment of work calling for a set of duties, responsibilities,and conditions that are different from those of other work assignments. For eg - sales manager and accountants etc POSITION- a position is a group of tasks assigned to an individual. It represents the combination of tasks and duties performed by the employee in a predetermined job location. OCCUPATION- it is something that engages the time,thought and attention of an employee. It refers to the common categories of job. These jobs are usually similar in nature with common job features. JOB ANALYSISJob analysis is a detailed and systematic study of jobs to know the nature and characteristics of people to be employed for each job. It is a process of discovering and identifying the pertinent information relating to the nature of a specific job. It is the determination of the tasks which comprise the job and of the skills, knowledge, abilities and attitudes required of the worker for successful performance of the job. The process of job analysis is essentially one of data collection and then analysing that data It provides the analyst with basic data pertaining to specific jobs in terms of duties, responsibilities, skills, knowledge degree of risk etc This data may be classified as follows 1) Job identification

2) Nature of the job 3). Operations involved in doing the job 4.) Materials and equipments to be used in doing the job 5.) Personal attributes required to do the job, eg, education, training,Physical strength, mental capabilities etc 6). Relation with the other jobs.

The information relating to a job which is thus classified, if examined carefully, would suggest that some information relates to the job and some concerns the individual doing the job. The requirements of a job are known as Job Descriptions and the qualities demanded from the job-holder are termed as Job Specifications. Thus, job descriptions and job specifications are the immediate by-products of job analysis.

OBJECTIVES OF JOB ANALYSISThe objectives of job analysis are to study processes, simplify methods, measure work for establishing job and time standards, provide information for compensation and incentive plans, and improve the safety, recruitment, selection, training, appraisal, and compensation of employees. These objectives of job analysis can be grouped under three heads : 1.Work simplification (job redesign). 2. Establishment of standards of work, 3- Support of other personnel activities. A job analysis seek to gather information about the job in two categories1) Primary job requirements 2) Job related knowledge , skills,and abilities (KSA) requirements. Under the primary job requirements category , a job analysis aims at gathering information relating to context, conditions, duties and responsibilities of the job.

With regard to  KSA category , job analysis gathers the necessary information for determining the extent of knowledge, skill, abilities required for a person to meet the job requirements completely and to perform the job successfully.
