This is dissucing George Carlin's standup routine "Stuff"...

Description

Journal 3 In George Carlin's standup routine "Stuff," he tackles the topic of having too many belongings and being a materialistic person. Throughout his routine, he uses repetition which draws the audience in as he continues to restate the title bringing emphasis and new meaning to it every time. He uses the word “stuff” in general to describe people’s belonging while still using it in specific situations. He talks about how “stuff” is the meaning of life and that our houses are just places to hold our “stuff”, so we can go buy more “stuff.” Carlin uses this rhetoric figure of repetition in a comedic was as the audience id drawn into the different ways he implements the word into the routine. Towards the end of the standup routine, Carlin finally replaces the word “stuff” with more specific items he says are a necessity such as money, keys, lighter, etc. This assumes that the other things he spoke about in the context of “stuff” were not necessary and are extra junk we have. Although the purpose of repetition in this matter is for comedic value, it works the same way in essay writing. The writer chooses a specific word or phrase to repeat throughout their text to show importance and restate their idea. This can be for laughs, or for a better understanding of the concept the writer is trying to convey. Either way, the audience recognizes there is something being emphasized. As a writer, I’d use this rhetoric figure to for its ability to allow the readers to get a clearer view onto what I want them to understand from my writing. I wouldn’t necessarily use repetition to the extent of Carlin as he would say the word 2-3 times in a sentence, but I would sprinkle that same word or phrase throughout the text enough so readers can see that this

word is being used very often so there has to be some importance there....
