Reaction paper on Marcos' historical revisionism...

Description

"Lies are not historical revisionism" Ambeth R. Ocampo Response Paper Notes by Britney Adante When youths are fed with sugar-coated lies and are ordered to proclaim the infamous former president Ferdinand Marcos' birthday as a day worth remembering, will this provide them an avenue to become passive Marcos apologists? Or do they tolerate a chance to change what is being laid out to them? To evaluate this House Bill No. 7137—“AN ACT DECLARING SEPTEMBER 11 OF EVERY YEAR A SPECIAL NONWORKING HOLIDAY IN THE PROVINCE OF ILOCOS NORTE IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF FORMER PRESIDENT FERDINAND EDRALIN MARCOS TO BE KNOWN AS ‘PRESIDENT FERDINAND EDRALIN MARCOS DAY’” despite the many pending bills that must have been a great leverage for the Filipinos is horrendous. This foreshadows how unsteady and erroneous our system here in the Philippines is. Frantically speaking, the Philippine legislative and executive are pooled with statesmen and women who are undignified to serve the country with honor and whose tenure is to propagate prejudices and monopoly. The senate-house is blindingly capable of assigning senators who make way for their agenda and not to uphold the order of the constitution as it is. Thus, the opinion paper written by Ocampo pointed out that the history of the country could be dismantled because of the term of biased alter-ego of the late Marcos lineage. To celebrate the birth of the man who was once a symbol of horror to the minds and hearts of every Filipino even today is a whack in the face of those who fought the war to preserve democracy and peace and to the newer generations who are critical in terms of assessing which historical pieces are ethical or false. The deja-vu being singled out in the column which asserted how two instances where Marcos' special holiday bill was proposed is a desecration in the original historical context of the country. We were once a martyr of historical tampering by foreign colonizers and to let it transpire again under the hands of our Filipino corrupt politicians would be unthinkable and outrageous. Drawn also in the paper is the number of legislators who agreed to enjoin Ilocos Norte in celebrating Ferdinand Marcos's birthday has outnumbered those who negated and

therefore, sense us that our history is dangerously malleable because of these people. Despite the bill having inconsistencies with its facts, the senate still entitled it to be given the odds to be ratified. Likewise, the country also was once furrowed when Marcos's heroes' burial became that of a comedic fodder inside and outside the country and left an impression of how Filipinos celebrate the death of a criminal over unsung heroes. Albeit, many critics would surface out and consider this litigation as unrequited because clearly, the country does not owe Marcos a special holiday. What they call the "Make Philippines Great Again" line of Marcos and his projects which they claimed to be honored will never revive those who have fallen already, those who shed blood, who screamed in pain and justice. These are just statements that we hold no strong foundation. Still, this rhetoric may be eye opening but many have voices, who will be heard? What is left to us? Dignity?History? Honor and Pride?...
