Public School: The challenges of chronic absenteeism. Absenteeism is a problem in the public school system. When a student has just missed two days out of one month the student is considered chronically absent. (Kelly, K. 2014). In most cases public school considers unexcused absences to be the same as excused absences. Students who have chronic absences are greatly affected as far as being a successful learner. Parents of these chronically absent students may not understand just how much such absences will disrupt the students learning ability. When students are chronically absent, they have a broken learning cycle. The instruction is not continuous for these students, which makes it harder for them to learn. How is chronic absenteeism defined? Chronic absenteeism is defined by how many days that a student misses the number of days varies from state to state. However, in some states just fifteen days missed in one school year is defined as chronic absenteeism. (Kelly, K. 2014). Included in the chronic absenteeism are excused absences, expulsion from school and of course unexcused absences. The consequences for chronic absenteeism in many states is truancy. Unfortunately, this process involves law enforcement. the local school district and state agency. (Kelly, K. 2014). Public schools are historically influenced by past students dropping out of school in only elementary. In the past students were dropping out of school to pursue employment. Therefore, a lot of students could not read or write. Fast forward to more modern times school districts

adopted policies that would allow students to learn the basic skills in order to become a more fully equipped functional member of society. Culturally public schools have been influenced by chronic absenteeism because some students may be immigrants, coming from a one parent home or even students having problems with their health. (Kelly, K. 2014). Legal influences of chronic absenteeism in public schools can be a direct result of a student becoming incarcerated. In any case of legal influences, the result is going to be parents paying a truancy fine, which now also creates an economic hardship for the family. In conclusion, Chronic absenteeism is defined by how many days that a student misses the number of days varies from state to state. However, in some states just fifteen days missed in one school year is defined as chronic absenteeism. (Kelly, K. 2014). Included in the chronic absenteeism are excused absences, expulsion from school and of course unexcused absences. Chronic absenteeism not only creates economic hardships for the family of the student. Truancy can also lead to the parents being arrested and thrown into jail for an undetermined amount of time. Parents being jailed can also contribute to the hardships because of days missed from work. Chronic absenteeism interrupts the student ability to learn basic skills to become a functional member of society. (Kelly, K. 2014). Students who are not able to obtain the proper education will not be able to go on to college or a university of their choosing. As a result of not being able to get some type of degree students will then as older adults will be stuck in exceptionally low paying jobs.
