Description

KFM2 — KFM2 TASK 1: VIDEO OBSERVATION Kayla Welden 5 February 2021 A. 1. Case #53 (Observing and Measuring Weather). There are about 20 students in the 2 nd grade classroom. The male and female students are 7 to 8 years old and come from families with varying ethnicities, cultures, and SESes. Some of the students are ELLs. 2. The learning theory that best aligns with the instructional and assessment strategies evident in the video is the Constructivism Theory. The teacher builds on the students’ prior knowledge. We know from the video commentary that half of the students had previously carried out an experiment where they measured weather and temperature. It is also noted that the children have shown regular interest in the weather based on personal experiences. B. 1. Case #520 (Analyzing Social Issues in Small Group Book Club Discussions). There are 31 students in the 7th and 8th grade reading and writing course. The focus of the video is three groups of male and female students ranging from 12 to 15 years of age. There is little racial diversity. One student is an ELL, two students are on the autism spectrum, and five students have documented reading/ writing issues. 2. I believe the Constructivist Theory is predominantly evident in this video. The teacher plans for the students to analyze and interpret text, as well as make connections to social issues present in their own lives; these instructions directly relate to the Constructivist Theory which states that “people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences” (2004). The students in each group pull information from the text and make connections to their own lived experiences. In the 2nd group specifically, the students identify that the social issue present in their text stems from religion. C. 1. Case #1283 (Analyzing American Literature Through a Fish Bowl Discussion). The high school junior class is comprised of 18 male and female students ranging in age from 16 to 17 years old. The student population is primarily white, native English speakers. Many of the students score in the “gifted” range. 2. The learning theory that best aligns with this lesson is the Cognitivist Theory. The teacher in this lesson promotes students’ self-efficacy by encouraging students to lead their own discussions about the novel. The fish bowl method requires students to engage with and process the information presented in the text, as well as information presented by other students. D. 1. Case #1670 (Developing a Paragraph for Journal Writing). The focus of this video is a 12 year old girl 6th grader named Kassidy. Kassidy identifies as Latina and African-American. She comes from, what seems to be, an unstable living situation. 2. The Behaviorist Theory aligns with the instruction in this video; the teacher models behavior for the student. Specifically, the instructor practices direct instruction to address Kassidy’s unique learning needs. Throughout the lesson, the instructor repeatedly gives instruction and guidance so that the student can eventually complete the task on her own.

KFM2 — KFM2 TASK 1: VIDEO OBSERVATION Kayla Welden 5 February 2021 E. As an educator, it is important to have a general understanding of psychology and human development. Students acquire information differently; learning theories were developed to help understand how each student learns. Teacher expectations should also be modified based on students’ unique physical, cognitive, social and emotional, and language development. Having this knowledge can help you as an educator by helping you understand the ways to teach and encourage your students. F.

By understanding the differences in developmental levels of individual students, I will modify my instruction accordingly. For example, I will Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Approach when planning lessons. If the students in a specific class show more success when socializing with peers, I will structure lessons where student are able to work in groups like seen in Case #520.

G. I will use my knowledge of learning theories to employ a multitude of instructional practices in my classroom. I understand that every individual learns differently so it is important to offer instruction that appeals to several learning theories. For example, I will utilize the fish bowl method of discussion in my classroom to foster self-efficacy and utilize instructional strategies that align with the Cognitivist Theory of learning.
