Rhetoric 102 Movie Review on King Corn After watching the movie “King Corn” it really gave me a lot to think about when it comes to what we are putting into our bodies every day. The best friends, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis introduce their research question which was asking how corn is found in our hair. They also were curious about why America has such a large obesity epidemic, and ended up moving to Iowa, where most corn originates. Through the help of their farming neighbors they learned about genetically modified seeds, nitrogen fertilizers, and government subsides. They bought their own acre of land to see where their corn would end up. One thing just kept leading to another in the movie, and it was very eye opening to see what really goes on in the food making process. I know that there are a lot of foods out there that humans shouldn’t be putting into their bodies, but for Cheney and Ellis to break it down to one single ingredient that is basically in every processed food, was mind blowing. I didn’t realize how many food items contained high fructose corn syrup, and the process of making this ingredient is intense. Most of corn originates from the state of Iowa, and this is where most of the growing is done. However, the farmers don’t care about the value of crops because the government pays the farmers. This is how farmers make most of their money, even though they lose money in the process of growing. Cheney and Ellis broke it down in a mathematical equation out of curiosity, and found that with every crop they plant, they lose about $19.92 in revenue. Overall, it gave me a better understanding of what goes into processed foods, and really has me turned off to eating fast food in general. We live in a country where our obesity epidemic is through the roof, and it seems that the farmers are just growing more and more high fructose corn syrup because all they care about is making money; not the aftermath it has on humans. I think the audience intended from this

movie is for adults that are concerned about the obesity epidemic and the main ingredients that go into most processed foods, specifically in this film high fructose corn syrup. There aren't any actors in the film because it is a documentary, so everyone that appears in the film is people being interviewed for Cheney and Ellis’s research. Most of the people that are in the documentary are farmers that bring information about the harvesting of corn. Work Cited King Corn. Aaron Woolf. Ian Cheney. October 12, 2007. Documentary....
