Summary

Written response focusing on "Kono Creation"...

Description

I believe that the story focusing on the Kono Creation does set up a hierarchy of power, as it appears that humans are the most valued in this setting. The story mentions that the children were unfortunately stolen, and the outcome of the situation is death for every single human being who shall be born after the mentioned children. There is a hierarchy present as people need to now experience the inevitable experience of death, which is an end to one’s life on Earth. (Death and Life and Death). I also believe that the story focusing on the Norse Creation does set up a hierarchy of power, with humans not being the most significant, as they were created last. The humans within the story were developed out of already existent animals, such as the cow. One other aspect of the hierarchy does exist in this story, as Heaven does not come into full form until the end, and is even mentioned in the beginning as not being a part of the world. I think that Heaven is not viewed as significant in this story’s culture, or has a deeper meaning. (Odin and Ymir). Humans will not be able to access Heaven for eternity, and I think that may be similar to how Christians believe that Jesus’ Second Coming will involve Him taking only a majority of the world population with Him to Heaven. Once the Second Coming occurs, I think that only people without access to Heaven will still be on Earth. I think the Kono creation grants more power to the people as they are the first ones to exist on the planet, before animals, plants, etc; (Death and Life and Death). I think the Norse Creation story grants more power to the environment and the giants, as they were the first to be mentioned (Odin and Ymir). The Kono creation story does actually distinguish between animals and humans, as it is mentioned that a few animals were used (bird and rooster) to help bring brightness into the world, to take over the darkness (Death and Life and Death). The Norse Creation story also emphasizes the different levels of power given to humans and animals, as human beings, or giants, were in existence first. The giants created animals out of environmental aspects like even frozen water, “As the ice dripped more, it formed a cow….”. (Odin and Ymir). Within the Kono Creation story, the opposed terms in the story include Death and Life. I think there is quite a difference in between the two, because Death is literally brought up within the first sentence, and is mentioned later as being the inevitable outcome of any human life. Death seems to outweigh any human life as it is a given punishment. (Death and Life and Death). Within the Norse Creation story, the opposed terms in the story include Heaven and life, as Heaven and the gateway are not brought up until the end. The idea of Heaven seems to actually be frowned upon in this story, or treated as less valuable than life, considering the fact how the Norse culture believes Heaven will fade away. (Odin and Ymir). I characterize the Kono society as possibly evil due to their fascination with death, while I characterize the Norse society as depressing due to their mention of Heaven not existing until the very end....
