Description

Koskoosh listened as the rest of his tribe packed up camp to seek new hunting grounds. Koskoosh had been once the tribe’s chief but was now blind and sickly. He stayed behind so as not to slow the others down. All members of tribe formed a circle around him. His granddaughter, Sit-cum-to-ha provided him with a small pile of firewood. He remembered how he and his friend Zingha watched the wolves kill a moose. In the days which followed, he had done many great deeds. He had been a leader of men and his name had become a curse in the mouths of his enemies. For long, his mind saw his past. The fire began to die out, and the cold entered his body. Then he heard a strange noise. His body shook as he recognized the sound…wolves. The wolves saw the fire, but was not afraid. They formed a circle around him and his small fire. He threw his burning stick at them, but they did not move away. The fire was dying out and the circle of wolves grew smaller and smaller. Thinking once again of the moose, he lowered the last torch and resigned himself to his death....
