Effects of Tide to Go Compared to Dryel
Introduction In this day in age we much more concerned about how your everyday lives hurt the planet. We here statistics everyday that are scarier then the day before about how long we have before all our recourses are gone. We have cut back on a number of things but there are still more ways to help the planet. Everyone has heard the statement take a shorter shower and it will save water, but the thing we don’t think about is all the energy used to make that water hot. This does not only apply to showers but anything hot water is used for. With this lab I set out to find a new way to heat water. Hypothesis Using the sun’s heat and aluminum foil will bring the temperature of water to a higher degree. Materials Thermometer (-50 °C
to 300
°C )
2 liter bottle 20 ml of water 1 sheet of Aluminum foil 1 sheet of Black paper Tape Scissors Piece of wood (to prop it up) Method 1. Take the label off of the bottle and poke a hole in the lid big enough for the thermometer to go in. 2. Rap half of the bottle in aluminum foil (vertical) tape to bottle. (optional: put black paper on the top of the aluminum foil and a little bit over the sides of the bottle) 3. Fill the bottle up with 20 ml of water and put lid on. Then put thermometer in hole in lid. 4. Set bottle outside in direct sun with it leaned against a piece of wood. 5. Check the temperature every 15 mins and record the time and temp. The idea was that the aluminum foil would reflect the sun back into the bottle and heat the water up. The black paper was supposed to absorb the heat and again warm the water. By keeping the bottle at an angle the sun hits more of the water thus creating a warmer temperature.

Results and Discussion From the data collected on the first test it can be seen that the water did not heat up at all. The longer the bottle sat outside the colder the water got. Every time the temperature was checked it go lower. With test one the cloud continued to move which meant that it was harder for the bottle to stay completely in the sun. the other problem test one had was that it was colder outside then was probably better for the experiment (60−62 ° F , 15−16 ° C) . The second test the temperature was raised 5 degrees. This test was done in a little bit warmer weather (75−77 ° F , 23−25° C) and there were not clouds at the time of the experiment. The second test did prove that the water can warmed up but having done the two test it shows that many factors have to be right for the experiment to work properly. The other problem I saw was with the design of the bottle and how I created the foil rapping. The black paper did not insulate the bottle like I intended it too. The sun was just bouncing off the foil and right back out of the bottle. If I could have made the bottle a little differently then the water probably would have heated up more. Conclusion Hypothesis: Using the sun’s heat and aluminum foil will bring the temperature of water to a higher degree. Given my finding from my experiment, my hypothesis correct under certain circumstances. The water was heated to a higher degree in the second test but with the first shows that the weather plays a big factor on how much the sun can actually heat up the water. Further testing could be done with a better made bottle to completely prove this hypothesis.
