Add 8 ml of hexane-1,6-diamine to a 50 ml beaker, followed by 8 drops of 25% sodium hydroxide. Add 8 ml of adipoly chloride in cyclohexane dropwise in the beaker. Let the two layers form. Remove the top layer and add in the beaker with water to remove any cyclohexane on the product. Dry the product using compressed air.

Data & Observation Two layers were formed in the 50 ml beaker. It was an exothermic reaction. Nylon was separated using a spatula.

Calculation & Results No Calculations were performed in this experiment.

Discussion & Conclusion

The purpose of the lab was to perform a polyamide polymer from acid chloride and diamine monomers to produce Nylon- 6,6. In this lab, hexane-1,6-diamine and adipoly chloride were used to produce Nylon. It was a short lab and was conducted successfully as Nylon-6,6 was produced. Post Lab Questions 1. Why would the rate of reaction be slower if the following ester was used in place of adipoyl chloride?

Order of acid derivatives reactivity as follows: Acid chloride < Anhydride < Ester < Amide. Hence adipoyl Chloride is more reactive. 2. The product of the following reaction is commonly known is Kevlar. Draw the polymer product of the following reaction.

3. Acid chlorides react with a wide variety of nucleophiles. What is the product of the following reaction where a diol is used as a nucleophile?
