LAB REPORT-4 WINTER 2020 WASHED SIEVE ANALYSIS
Specification: Fine Aggregate: Sieve 9.5mm 4.75mm 2.36mm 1.18mm 600µm 300µm 150µm
Percentage Passing 100 95-100 80-100 50-85 25-60 10-30 2-10
(Not over 45% passing any sieve shall be retained on the next consecutive sieve.) (b) Fineness modulus shall be between 2.3 and 3.1. (c) Not over 5% finer than 75µm (3% for concrete subjected to abrasion). Procedure: 1. Oven-dry the sample at 1100C ± 50C and measure the mass. 2. Wash, pouring the wash water over a 75µm sieve. Continue until the water is clear. Return any coarse material in the sieve to the sample. 3. Dry the washed sample at 1100C ± 50C. 4. Place the sample in a nest of sieves and shake for 20 minutes. 5. Obtain the mass retained on each sieve. Note that the total mass passing the 75µm sieve is the sum of the amount washed through the sieve and the amount passing the 75µm sieve on dry sieving. Exercise 1: A) Prepare a sample for wash sieve analysis and weigh the total sample. B) Sieve the dried sample for 5 minutes and measure the sample mass retained in each sieve size. C) Record your findings in a table as outlined below. D) Determine the margin of error. E) Plot the cumulative % finer values obtained against their respective soil sizes on a semilogarithmic graph (one axis) with the sieve sizes on the log scale and cumulative % finer values on the linear scale. F) Determine fineness modulus G) Give a recommendation on the suitability of your sample for use in concrete.

Recommendation: Fineness Modulus of Fine Aggregate should be between range of 2.2 – 2.6 and we got 2.3. So the type of sand is Fine. This sample can be used in construction.

LAB REPORT-4 WINTER 2020 WASHED SIEVE ANALYSIS
Calculations: Total Actual Mass of unwashed sample= 251.50+3.8= 255.3 g Margin of error = Measured Mass of unwashed sample-Actual Mass of unwashed sample x 100 Measured mass of unwashed sample = 255.2-255.3 x 100 255.2 = 0.039%
Fineness Modulus = Σ Cumulative % retained on 9.5mm - 150µm sieves (exclude 0.075µm) 100 = 230.55 100 = 2.30 [ Range between 2.2 – 2.6 ], So the type of sand is Fine.
% Fines= 3.8+0.3 * 100 255.2 = 1.61%
