Questions

A. Were the seeds in the “N” tube undergoing both photosynthesis and respiration, only photosynthesis, or only respiration? Use your results in Data Table 1 and Graph 1 to support your answer. The seeds within the “N” tube were not going through photosynthesis or respiration. Therefore, the seed that is not germinating is dormant and is not going through a cellular respiration. It is only when it starts germinating does it become active and then go through a process of photosynthesis and respiration.

B. Were the seeds in the “G” tube undergoing both photosynthesis and respiration, only photosynthesis, or only respiration? Use your results in Data Table 1 and Graph 1 to support your answer. The “G” tube seeds were going through both photosynthesis and respiration. This was supported by the fact that photosynthesis was occurring when the light source was placed above the test tubes and the water levels increased. In addition, the observation of bubbles over time with the germinated seed test tube indicated that activity and energy was being created by the germinated seeds through the process of photosynthesis.

C. Describe the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration. During the process of photosynthesis carbon dioxide is up and then oxygen begins to be produced. In respiration oxygen is used up and then carbon dioxide begins to be produced. So, the processes are opposite of each-other but both include oxygen and carbon dioxide.

D. Review the equations used to describe photosynthesis and respiration (as provided in the introduction and background section of this experiment). Why was it important to use germinated seeds without leaves for this experiment? If the seeds had leaved than the reaction between the NaOH and CO2 would be compromised by the leaves. The leaves would alter the oxygen levels within the tube....
