Discussion 1.
Sulphur is the longest size than Oxygen atom. The bond length is the distance between the centers of two atoms. Since Sulphur is large, the S--H bond is larger than the O--H bond.
2. What is the relationship between atomic size and bond length for H2O / H2S and CO2 /
CS2? Atomic size increases → bond length also increases. “S” is larger in size than O so the S--H bond in H2S is larger than O--H bond in H2O.
Again in CO2 and CS2, the C--S bond will be larger than C--O bond due to higher atomic size of sulphur.
3. What are the carbon-carbon bond lengths in each of these three molecules? Using Table 7.2 draw the structures for C2H6, C2H4 and C2H2, and determine the carbon-carbon bond lengths for each structure. C2H6
C--C bond length in ethane is 1.54 A or 154 P.m C is 5p^3 hybridization, bond length -- 109° 28’.
~C2H4
C--C bond length in ethane is 1.33 A or 133 P.m. Carbons are 5p^2 hybridization bond angle 120°.
~C2H2
C--C bond length is 1.20 A or 120 P.m. Carbons are %p hybridization bond angle 180°.
4. What is the pattern in bond length that you notice for the carbon compounds in question 3? On question 3 the C--C bond length of C2H6 is larger than the C--C bond of C2H4 than C--C bond of C2H2....
