Description

Lab A-Mind and Body Connection Due Jan 22nd, 2021 Kiarra Robinson Questions: 1) My main sources up until now have been people in positions of authority around me, such as my parents, my coaches or my teachers. I also find health interesting and some of my information comes from me searching up questions I have and finding a reliable source to answer them. 2) I feel as though asking questions and not taking it personally are two anger management strategies that could help me. I am already a very empathetic person, but I also have a tendency to take minor things very personally and overthink little actions. This is why taking a step back from a situation and understanding that not everything is personal could help me be more calm instead of angry. 3) I would personally like to focus on improving my physical wellness. I used to play a lot of sports and I was very active and went to the gym a lot, but with the pandemic I have definitely fallen behind on working out and being in a good shape. I could use the University’s track, or the University’s gym once they are allowed to open up, or I could use the various pathways and walkways as a place to walk or run more. Lab questions: 1) The unrealistic claims made in this ad include: - The ad claims it will “block sugar”, but doesn’t specify how, where, what actually will block the sugar, and what blocking the sugar will do for you. - It also says it will “disperse oil particles” but again, the same problems arise as above. - This ad says it will block carbohydrates, but that is an unrealistic claim because your body needs carbohydrates to survive and continue being alive. 2) The target group of this ad is more towards women, because the model in the ad is a woman and is “showing off” her weight loss by wearing pants that are many sizes too big for her. As well, a big selling point is that the buyer only has to eat two candies after a meal. The word “candies” brings more of a feminine mood to the ad, which matches the pink highlight over the word candy and the female silhouette on the logo. 3) There is no explicit statement that promises fast results, however the phrase “just two candies after meals” implies that only a few number of candies will need to be eaten in order for the buyer to see results. They more focused their marketing on the easiness and simplicity of their product. 4) There are unsafe implications tied to this ad. By saying it will block carbohydrates and sugars, two things our bodies need to survive, it implies to people who see the ad that those things are bad. They may try to cut those things out of their diet, or take these candies, and experience low and potentially harmful levels of these needed nutrients. 5) The ad capitalizes on the ease of only taking two candies per meal, and makes it look as though every time you take a candy they work, and that helps you lose a ton of weight.

Lab A-Mind and Body Connection Due Jan 22nd, 2021 Kiarra Robinson It implies the model used lost all that weight just using the candies. It also uses big, bold letters and bright colours to draw people in to read the ad. 6) Blocking sugar completely means the body will have no energy to do anything (page 271), and will not contribute to weight loss but will contribute to a higher risk of disease, sickness or death. Hostility Assessment, Lab Activity 10.1 Part II (pp. 457-458 in textbook) • Answer the questions in this lab activity with a true or false, according to how you would most likely respond. Submit this lab page instead of p. 457-458. • How many “true” answers did you have? Score: ___4_______ • What does this tell you about your level of hostility? (see p. 458 of textbook). ___I am not considered excessively hostile, but I could probably calm down a little more. _ Locus of Control • Go to the website (www.similarminds.com). Access the “Personality Tests” and find the Locus of Control test. Take the test and record your scores below: Internal Locus of Control __51___ % External Locus of Control __49___ % Comment on your scores and the assessment made by the program. Do you agree with the assessment? Justify your comments. _____I feel as though it is an accurate showing of how I think and feel about the world; I feel as though I am good at knowing when something is directly my fault and acknowledging that, and also when something is out of my control and wasn’t my fault. The test said that a result like this is called an Ambivalent locus of control. It also says that “you believe your life is defined about equally by both internal forces (drive, free will, etc.) and external forces (genetics, environment, fate). I agree with this because I am a little superstitious about sports or bad feelings, but I’m also quite logical about how to achieve my goals and I know that my destiny isn’t set in stone. ____ References:
