Description

The relationship of FOMO (feeling of missing out) and Self-Esteem with the use of social media Abstract & Introduction: The main purpose of this essay is to keep main focus on ‘the feeling of missing out’ (FOMO) and self-esteem which is an individuals subjective emotions; feeling good about yourself and to also feel accepted. The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between each points and the increased use of social media. To get the outcome a questionnaire was given out to 47 Middlesex university students. To my surprise the correlation was negative; it didn’t show a link between the feeling of FOMO and self-esteem levels. On the other hand, when looking into other studies Pryzbylski et al shows that there’s a positive correlation between the Relationship of FOMO and social media. Also different studies show that social media causes an effect to self esteem levels. In this essay, I will talk about the outcome of causes of the studies and how changes could make it somehow better for example, focusing on a particular sex group E.G. just doing the study on boys. To conclude, when looking at the correlation between FOMO and self- esteem the correlation is negative but the use of social media provides us with information on both topics /as it’s on a large scale and focus particularly on emotional state and feeling of self worth.

Method:

In Middlesex University, there are 47 students who study foundation psychology; 39 females, 8 males. These students were all given questionnaires to fill out in which they had to be completed. 2 students decided that they didn’t want to be part of the study which means they failed to take part therefore the data changed as their data was removed from the results. The importance of the questionnaire was to find out the relations of FOMO and self-esteem. In order to find the relation between fear of missing out (FOMO) and self-esteem 47 students were given 2 questionnaires.

Results of the current study confirm that the relationship between FOMO and self esteems show a negative correlation. Therefore this study supports the hypothesis. FOMO and selfesteem link in terms of human emotions therefore some may find it confusing that the correlation between the 2 is negative. If an individual feels left out in a particular thing it may

damaged their self esteem levels which could later cause severe mental health issues such as depression.
