Global health vs. public health vs. international health



International health = essentially the study of the health of poor people in poor countries  Sometimes seen as “us” and “them” 

Gap in what the world needs in terms of medicine and what is profitable to invest in/ produce   1. What’s the problem and how bad is it?   

2. Who gets it? 3. Why do they get it? 4. Why should the leaders care?

  

5. What should be done?

Usually what is ideal is impossible financially, so must take minister of finance’s viewpoint  Minister of health does not have direct control over the causes of disease in low-income countries  

Goal of health ministers in low-income countries: bury old people instead of young people and make the transition at a low cost  

How you spend money is substantially more important than how much you spend
