What requirements are there to practise law in NSW? You need to be admitted as a lawyer to the Australian legal profession and hold a current Australian practising certificate. 2. What can the Law Society offer law students? The Law Society holds careers fairs for law students along with a graduate mentoring program, assistance in getting their practising certificate, a law graduate’s report to assist law students in gaining industry placements, knowledge about ethical obligations in the legal practice and further resources. 3. What is ‘Monday Briefs’? Monday Briefs is an online publication created and provided by the Law Society which is like a newsletter specific to the legal world. It keeps those interested in the law up to date with current issues concerning the law. 4. Use the website to find: (a) An advertised job: Casual ‘Paralegal in the policy and practice department’ (b) A law firm in Fairfield where there is an accredited specialist in family law: David Legal (c) How the Law Society might be able to assist a potential client who can’t afford legal fees: The Law Society’s Pro Bono Scheme can put them in contact with law firms willing to provide free/reduced legal services. No. 2. Who regulates barristers in NSW? Bar Association 3. What is BarCare? Independent professional counselling service designed to assist NSW bar members to manage stress related problems. 4. Locate a Mandarin-speaking barrister. In what areas does the barrister practise? Thomas Liu at 7 Wentworth Selborne practices public law and commercial matters. However, he also accepts briefs in criminal law. 5. How does one become a barrister in NSW? To become a barrister, you need to be admitted as a lawyer in an Australian jurisdiction. One would then have to sit and pass the NSW Bar exam and then complete the reading program which includes attending the Bar Practice Course obtaining satisfactory participation whilst also conducting one year of readership under the supervision of a tutor. then obtain their practising certificate and then find a chamber. 6.
