Subject Overview Abstract This subject is designed to introduce students to systems administration of Linux servers that provide information services accessed through the internet. Students learn to operate servers via the command line, write scripts to automate management tasks, create and manage networked information services, and assess tools for improving data and service protection.

Learning outcomes Upon successful completion of this subject, students should: • • • • • •

be able to apply technical knowledge to manage servers; be able to investigate the layout of server file systems; be able to plan, create and manage information services; be able to design and write scripts to automate various server management tasks; be able to justify an appropriate protection strategy for data and services; and be able to critically evaluate security policies and procedures.

Subject content This subject provides a general introduction to managing computers called servers that provide web, file, electronic mail, and similar kinds of networked services. Computers running the Linux operating system are studied. Students learn to operate servers via the command line, write scripts to automate management tasks, analyse and improve the performance of servers, create and manage basic information services, and assess methods required to protect data and services accessed from the internet.

Key subjects Passing a key subject is one of the indicators of satisfactory academic progress through your course. You must pass the key subjects in your course at no more than two attempts. The first time you fail a key subject you will be at risk of exclusion; if you fail a second time you will be excluded from the course. The Academic Progress Policy (https://policy.csu.edu.au/view.current.php?id=00250) sets out the requirements and procedures for satisfactory academic progress, for the exclusion of students who fail to progress satisfactorily and for the termination of enrolment for students who fail to complete in the maximum allowed time.

Learning materials Details of learning materials that support your success in this subject can be found in the Interact2 Subject Site.

Learning, teaching and support strategies All of your subject materials are available in the resource section of your interact site. I suggest that for each topic you carefully read the learning objectives, read the overview and read the relevant chapter from the text book. Once you have got a feel for what the chapter topic is about, try and make a good set of notes in that topic. There are quizzes for each topic. Once you feel ready you can test yourself by taking the online quiz in the topic – there are marks recorded and you can do each quiz only once. In this subject, there are also lots of opportunities for you to engage with your lecturer, with your peers, and with the subject. I will be holding 12 online meetings/face to face (virtual) throughout the session where we can discuss content issues and assessment items, details of times and dates will be posted on the Interact site. In addition, I will regularly post in Discussion Board relating to the subject content. As part of your assessment in this subject, you are required to prepare reports. In the Discussion Board, you are expected to contribute to the discussion that may be helpful for others. Please have a look at the online tutorial/topics in the Interact site and read the text before joining the online discussion, so that you can contribute to the discussion and derive more meaning from the activities. We may spend discussion time working through the topic questions and preparing responses.

It is helpful to have quizzes to complete throughout the session so that you have a focus on the subject. If you don’t attempt the quiz, I may contact you by phone or email to have a chat about study and if there are any issues that I can help with. You should check the Interact Site on a regular basis for postings, announcements, lecture information, and other resources that will assist your studies or additional information and resources vital to your success in the subject. Studying at university does not mean studying alone. During the class, you will have an opportunity to interact with the lecturer as well as your peers. Use the subject schedule to plan your studies over the session.
