Description

Rhyme 1.) Regarding a regular rhyme scheme, the poem, My Father’s Song, doesn’t have one. This poem is written almost as a free verse. 2.) The poem, My Father’s Song, includes end rhyme. For example, the words sand and hand. The poem also uses internal rhyme such as, furrow and burrow. 3.) The rhyme scheme used in the poem affects the tone because once you use one of the different rhyme schemes you began to piece together certain words or read it in a different style, prior. Meter 1.) Regarding meters, the poem, My Father’s Song, uses iambic pentameter. 2.) The meter affects the tone of the poem by giving it a somber mood. It is about a boy losing his father and with the pausing it makes the reader take in the emotion of the author.

Form 1.) The form this poem is traditional and is written as an ode. It is an ode because it mediates a single ‘object’, that being his dad. 2.) This poem follows a traditional form but has untraditional content. This is probably due to the author originally wanting this poem to be a free verse, speaking strictly about his father, but made it an ode. The author probably wanted characteristics of traditional form but decided that he’d rather write freely.

Poetic Syntax 1.) In the poem, My Father’s Song, the author uses enjambment in the first two lines, “Wanting to say things” “I miss my father tonight.” (Ortiz). This affects the sound and meaning of the lines because it places a somber mood. Being that there is a pause you see that he has something he wants to say to his father, and it’s just that he misses him. Him saying just that speaks volumes, I assume that he cares of nothing else that has happened since his absence. 2.) Regarding caesura, Ortiz uses one in the third line, “His voice, the slight catch,” (Ortiz). The impact of this use shows that he really misses his father and once again places a somber mood making the reader empathize with the author. 3.) The sentences in this poem vary in length. The length of the sentences relates to the poems meaning because they probably represent the time he has spent with him. Sound 1.) In the poem, My Father’s Song, the author uses rhyme, meter, form, and poetic syntax to create the sound of the poem that ties into the meaning of the poem. 2.) The author uses repetition to help set the mood of the poem. With the continuous use of assonance, we drag on certain words that tie into the meaning of the poem. 3.) The sounds of the poem let the reader know that the poem was intentionally meant to be sad and somber, this connects to the meaning of the poem because it is about mourning and being sad....
