Description

When I looked at the “Live Piracy Map” the description stated that the map was supposed to illustrate “all piracy and armed robbery incidents reported to IMB Piracy reporting Centre during 2020.”(ICC 2020) According to the text we often hear about pirate attacks near around North Africa but that does not mean that it does not happen elsewhere. In fact, “most contemporary attacks occur in the area of southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.”

While looking at the map I found that that you will probably not see any pirate attacks or hijackings in North America because so far in 2020 that is the only area that shows no activity of any kind. However, once I moved further south, I saw that there were two instances of pirate boarding’s. One off the coast of Peru in the Lima district and the other was farther North in Cartagena, Colombia. As stated in the text I did see a lot of Activity around Asia and India with a lot of Activity happening in Southeast Asia around Brunei and the Philippines. I however saw only one incident of Boarding in India which was surprising because I was expecting to see more. While looking at this map I did notice that the majority of the incidents that happened were boarding’s but in West Africa I did see that there was a lot of activity in one specific area and it had the most diverse activity from attempted attack to boarding’s and even some vessels being fired upon. These attacks took place on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea and happened mostly in Nigeria and traveled up to Benin and Togo. This was also surprising because I was expecting most of these attacks to be in Somalia or Kenya, but it was on the other side of the continent. Given that we are only a month and a couple days into 2020 I do consider 17 incidents to be high, especially since some of them were violent encounters.
