Good morning all So, the aim here is to test your comprehension of the role of GABA in epilepsy prevention. Discuss how GABA can decrease seizure prevalence, and how drugs can be used to modulate it.

RE: The role of GABA Overall Rating:

GABA can reduce seizures because they are the primary inhibitory neurotransmitters which means that they inhibit action potentials (therefore inhibiting hypersxcitability). By using drugs to enhance GABA activity we can control epilepsy. We do this by reducing catabolism of GABA, reducing GABA uptake from the synaptic cleft and lastly increasing the synthesis of GABA. Nicely done Cameron! You can also increase GABA release (as with gabapentin) or activate GABAA-receptors (such as benzodiazepines). Link these concepts with the relevant enzymes and receptors.
