Description of Skill Assessing the lochia (uterine/vaginal discharge) postpartum to assess whether adequate healing is occuring within the uterus.
Indications - postpartum female - checking in throughout 6 weeks of healing after birth
Outcomes/Evaluation 1. Lochia Rubra (Red) - Dark red or bright red. Heavy flow, small or medium clots. Appropriate 1-3 days after birth. 2. Lochia Serosa - Pinkish, brown. 4-10 days after birth. There is less blood, more discharge, fewer clots. 3. Lochia Alba - yellow, white. Lasts up to 6 weeks. Very little blood, some discharge, but no clots.
Potential Complications These are RED FLAGS 1. Soaking through a pad in 1 hour or less 2. passing clots bigger than a golf ball 3. bleeding that stops but then starts again 4. fever 5. More abdominal pain than usual

Client Education Educate the client on the normal types of lochia for how many days postpartum they can expect it. Ensure client understands what changes are life threatening and when to call the provider.
