Song lyrics and the meaning of them....

Description

Logic-1-800-273-8255 Ft Alessia Cara & Khalid Suicide is something that is often times avoided publicly. Recently a show called Thirteen Reasons Why and a song by Logic called 1-800-273-8255, came out. Both are about the topic of suicide. It is a very controversial topic, which is why it is often avoided. Robert Bryson Hall II also known as Logic wrote the number five song on the Billboard 100s at this moment. (Billboard) It is called 1-800-263-8255. That phone number is the suicide hotline. Most of the songs produced in the music industry are about sex, drugs or love. You do not hear many songs on the radio talking about wanting to die. To give you a little bit of a feel for the song Logic produced that has become such an inspiration to everyone, these are some lyrics. “I've been praying for somebody to save me, no one's heroic, And my life don't even matter, I know it, I know it, I'm hurting deep down but can’t show it”.(Genius) T  hese lyrics are rather clear about the meaning. Logic is saying how his life does not matter and he is hurt. When this song first came out on the radio, I changed it EVERY single time for the first few weeks because when one is listening to music I do not think they would like to hear “I don’t want to be alive, I just want to die”. I was in the car with a friend and when I went to skip it they said “actually listen to it”. I proceeded to listen to it and it ended up being a really inspiring song about life. The meaning of the song is as stated,”Ultimately, the song delivers a message of hope — the second verse features the lyrics “You don’t gotta die, I want you to be alive,” told from the perspective of the person offering emotional support at the other end of the line. The song’s final lyrics find the caller determined to keep fighting: “The lane I travel feels alone / but I’m moving

’til my legs give out / and I see my tears melt in the snow / but I don’t wanna cry / I don’t wanna cry anymore / I wanna feel alive / I don’t even wanna die anymore”. (The Washington Post) T  he song is about a call to the suicide hotline from a person who does not want to live any longer. The economic risks involved with Logic making this song was that people could turn around and shun him as an artist because of writing a song about suicide which is a very touchy subject. Which could have and still might lead him to losing fans which is losing money because his fans are what keeps his career going. With no one listening to his songs that is money being lost. Logic was apart of Def Jam Records but now has his own record label. His record label is called Elysium.  He made this label because as stated, “Elysium was created mainly because I don’t trust anybody else, with the precious cargo that is my family”.(XXL Mag)  Having his own record label is definitely the reason why he does not think twice about creating songs like this one. He is his own boss. If this song did fail, the downside would be HIS label and his hard work down the drain. I believe that Logic ultimately proceeded with this song ignoring the risks because this is such a heavy topic and it is often disregarded when suicide deaths occur and no one knew or if they did they did not try and help. Logic performed this song with two other singing icons at the moment, Alessia Cara and Khalid at the 2017 VMA’s. Alessia is known for her inspiring songs about loving yourself, being strong and beautiful. Khalid just began making music within the past year and he has a very calming vibe and writes about being a teenager in this generation. After the three performed this song the suicide hotline increased by 50 percent. “As CNN  reports, calls to the lifeline increased by 50 percent following the performance”.(The FADER)

I do not know if more products with this exact topic will be made in the future. Relating back to our classes Lynda Obst reading, she talks a lot about studios being repetitive and making a ton of sequels because the studios know they will succeed. In the music world it is the same thing. Artists will write songs about love, sex and drugs because they know it will appeal to their listeners. (Obst ) When the music video for this song was released, it was about a boy wanting to kill himself over being badly mistreated by his father for liking boys. The boy in the video has a gun and attempts to shoot himself. I found a very interesting fact online. It goes as follows, “Firearms account for approximately half of all suicide deaths in the United States”.(Anestis, Michael D,Anestis, Joye C.& Butterworth, Sarah E. )  That is a very large number. Laws have now been put in place because of this haunting statistic. Suicide is not the way out. People often rather die than live over certain things such as bullying in school or online taunting. “The White suicide rate increased from 10.96 to 11.60 suicides per 100,000 residents and the Black suicide rate remained steady at 0.70 suicides per 100,000”.(Jones, Roderick W. & Pridemore, William Alex)  These numbers and percentages are too large. Logic is an incredible artist and this song definitely raised awareness. Calling 1-800-273-8255 can save a life, maybe even thousands.
