He sees it as a serious responsibility, and it seems to tire him out at this point. What was it? Phil reports that he saw something big and horrid in the trees of the jungle, which turned out to be Simon going to his spot in the jungle. 5.How does Jack deal with the fear? Jack, while he denies the existence of a beast, implies that if there were one, he, as a hunter, would kill it. Analytical Questions: 1.Why are rules important to Ralph? Because he knows that its the only thing holding the boys from complete anarchy. 2.What does Piggy represent in his speech at the assembly? Piggy, now half blind, stands for rules, intelligence, science, and order, which are in tatters. 3. Which two boys desperately try to convince Ralph to remain as chief after Jack breaks up the meeting? Piggy because he wants him to protect him from Jack and Simon tries to because he thinks it is the only way to protect themselves from the beast. 4. Why doesn't Ralph blow the conch when the meeting dissolves into chaos? He isn't sure if he still wants to be the chief. 5.What do you think Simon means when he says, "Maybe there is a beast"? He means maybe they are the beast as they are turning on each other and becoming savages.
