CAPSULE Post Lab Questions: 1. Describe the punch method. The punch method is the repeated pressing of the open end of the body of the shell down into the powder. The pharmacist uses the punch method to hand-fill capsules. The powder is placed on powder paper and smoothened with a spatula to a height half of the length of the capsule body. The base of the capsule will be held vertically, and the open end is repeatedly punched into the powder until the capsule is filled. The cap will be replaced to enclose the capsule. All capsules are weighed using an empty capsule as a counterweight and then the powders will be added/removed until the correct weight is placed in the capsule. 2. Give the different sizes of hard gelatin capsules and the approximate capacity by capsule size? Give examples of diluents and disintegrants that are frequently added to capsule formulation. Some examples of diluents and disintegrants are lactose, croscarmellose, crospovidone, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium aluminum silicate. 3. Compare the procedures for compounding hard gelatin capsules with tablets and hard gelatin capsules with liquid ingredients. To create empty hard gelatin capsules, the first step is the preparation of the gelatin solution is needed. The second step is to Dip-coat the gelatin solution onto metal pins. The third step is the rotation of the Dip-coated pins. The fourth step is drying the gelatin-coated pins. The fifth step is Stripping and trimming. The sixth step Joining the trimmed capsule shell. And lastly, printing. To put the tablets into the capsules, the tablets are placed in hoppers and allowed to fall down tubes, at the bottom of which is

The tablets will fall by gravity into the body of the capsules as they pass under the hopper. To create hard gelatin capsules with liquid ingredients, the first step is the rectification of capsules. It is the lacing of the empty gelatin capsules on the removable plate with bodies facing down. The second step is the separation of the caps from bodies. The third step is dosing of fill material. The body will be filled with the formulation by using a plastic spatula. The excess powder is going to be removed. The fourth step is the replacement of caps and closing the capsule shells. Lastly is the ejection of filled capsules....
