Students form human chain to pro pollution-free Bhogi

By RANDOR GUY G. RAMANATHAN - 23 G. Ramanathan’s music in Modern Theatres’ folk myth tale of seven sisters, ‘Aaravalli’ (1957) was outstanding in many ways, and isstill popular and heard by folks on the Internet and other avenues even after nearly 60 years. A fantastic achievement indeed for the music maestro of Tamil Cinema! Somewhat interestingly, more than half of the songs in this movie are all comedy-based, filmed on a handful of comedians like A. Karunanidhi, S. S. Sivasuriyan, Sattampillai Venkataramanand an unknown unnamed and uncredited dancer who would soon zoom to fame under the name C. L. Anandan in the Citadel Films’ hit movie ‘Vijayapuri Veeran’, directed by Joseph Thaliath Jr. and written by the soon-to-be film maestro A. C. Thirulokachandar who wrote the screenplay based on the adventures of Three Musketeers . The first comedy song was ‘Chinnakutti naathana chillaraiai maathinaa, Kunnakudi pora vandiyiley kudumbam poora ethinaa...!’ (Chinnakutti naathanaa, a woman, bundled all her family into a cart going to Kunnakudi!) (Voice Tiruchi Loganathan, lyrics, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram). This song is in raga Sankarabharanam, normally rendered in concerts and made famous by legends like Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Ayyangar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Madurai Mani Iyer, G.N. Balasubramaniam (GNB), D.K. Pattammal , M.S. Subbulakshmi, the sadly forgotten N.C. Vasanthakokilam, M.L. Vasanthakumari, K.B. Sundarambal and others. That such a classical raga was adapted by G. Ramanathan in a comedy songspeaks highly about the musical genius of the composer… The second song ‘Pazhkamillatha kazhudhai kitte konjam paarthu karakkanum paaley’ is sung by more than one singer. It is about problems that arise when one tries to milk donkeys which are blind and arrogant. (Between the lines, it takes a dig at the women keeping constant watch over the men!) This song was in another classical raga Harikambodhi and was rendered by Tiruchi Loganathan, Sirgazhi Govindarajan and others, and was filmed on a group of comedians, not credited, who included, as already noted, the soon to be hero C.L. Anandan. The third song ‘Gummalam pottathellam adangiyatha’ is sung off screen by more than one voice which included Tiruchi Loganathan, Sirgazhi Govindarajan and others and filmed on comedians who are released after Aaravalli (G. Varalakshmi) was defeated and taken prisoner. In an earlier sequence, the same song in the same raga was sung by women soldiers led by T. P. Muthulakshmi, rendered off screen by Jikki and others. Both songs were in Senjuritti, another classical Carnatic music raga. All the above songs became hits and are still popular. (This writer, then in college, watched this movie more than once and was hookedand got more or less addicted to the above 3 songs! Now with the songs available on the Internet and DVD, he listens to themalmost every day! Such is the melody of those songs!) Another song ‘Chinna pennaana podhiley’, filmed on the princess (Mynavathi) and her lover was sung by Jikki and A.M. Rajah. This tune was a straight lift - laws of copyright be damned! - from the popular western hit melody ‘Que sera sera, whatever will be will be’ rendered by Doris Day, the Hollywood star, in the film‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’. It had won the Oscar Award for the Best Song (This version is in Spanish). This song had another version in Italian, ‘Che Sara Sara….’. This famous line was the family motto of the Duke of Bedford, f fi i B iti h hi t d l d t d b thi

Constables suspended in sexual assault case By Our Staff Reporter Two head constables attached to Mambalam Police Station were placed under suspension following orders passed by the city Police Commissioner, S. George, on Jan. 14. He passed the orders based on the report filed by CBCID after its enquiry into an allegation that a 19-year-old male suspect was sexually assaulted in police custody. A CBCID team investigated the claim that a teenager was sexually abused by three unidentified men brought in by the policemen on duty. The teenager and his two aides were picked up by the police on Dec.
