Description

Thank you all for being here tonight and lending us your attention. Our presentation group has reviewed the article What Every Leader Needs to Know about followers, written by Barbara Kellerman. The article outlines how the distinctions among followers are every bit as consequential as those among leaders. In order for us to fully understand the relationship between leaders and followers, we first need to identify what a leader is and the different types of leaders you might find in the Business world or even our society. So, what is a leader? Perhaps someone you’ve known or worked for comes to mind when you’re asked this question. Perhaps a number of different ideal qualities run through your mind. Perhaps you have never met someone you would consider to be a leader. A leader, though, can be defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country”. The truth is, leaders come in many different forms, They often embody certain personality traits like integrity, excellent communication, charisma and effective decision making, just to name a few. The text by Samson, Donnet and Daft suggests that leaders fit into 3 different categories: Charismatic leaders, Transformational leaders and Transactional leaders. Charismatic leaders, have an innate ability to motivate their followers or employees and to encourage them to exceed their expected performance levels. They can effectively motivate followers in the pursuit of a vision rather than a set goal. Transformational leaders on the other hand, are distinguished by their unique ability to encourage innovation and change. They enhance morale and job performance by connecting to a follower’s sense of identity in an organization or group. This kind of leader is often seen as a role model for their followers, inspiring and spiking follower’s interests in projects. And lastly, the 3rd type of leader is a Transactional leader, as the name would suggest this kind of leadership style gives and takes. It focuses on supervision and high levels of organization and performance. Compliance with followers is promoted through both rewards and punishments. Leadership, however, really is a quality of its own and is largely down to the perceptions and interests of the followers. Two perfect examples Obama and Trump. It can be said that President Donald Trump embodies a Charismatic leadership approach, though you might not all agree, it’s through his speeches and somewhat bold and infamously crude comments he somehow manages to captivate a very large number of followers. Whereas the former president Barak Obama appeared to have adopted a Transformational leadership style, he very successfully won over a large number of followers with his inspiring messages of hope and change during his election campaign and utilised his natural skill of Charisma embodying the charismatic leadership style as well. In order to continue to understand “What Every Leader Needs to Know About Followers”, we know need to take a look at the followers themselves. Thank you....
